Find out about the Netherlands’ history at the World Cup. Learn about their most famous victories, biggest wins, highest capped players, top scorers, and more!

The Netherlands are a team that has great history at the World Cup, with the past proving they can produce great performances and go deep into the tournament on multiple occasions.

Though not attending as many tournaments as some other top nations, the Netherlands have still been able to impact the World Cup and how it’s perceived historically.

Read on below to discover more about the history of the Netherlands at the World Cup, going over their record at the tournament, iconic memories, top appearance makers and goalscorers, and so much more!

What is the Netherlands’ World Cup record?

Despite potentially underperforming for a few years now, the Netherlands still have a good record at the World Cup, qualifying 12 times including the 2026 edition. Though their current qualifying streak is only two, after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the Netherlands are still a strong contender for 2026 considering the quality of players they have at their disposal.

After playing 55 games, their record is 30 wins, 14 draws and 11 losses, giving them a very respectable win rate of 54%.

Though never winning the tournament, they have reached the final on three occasions, including in 1974, 1978, and 2010. Considering they finished in back-to-back finals too, they’ve clearly been in possession of some world-class teams over the years.

More recently though, their best period came between 1998 and 2014, which included second, third, and fourth place finishes, further proving their ability to go far at the tournament.

What is the Netherlands’ record against their group stage opponents?

The 2026 World Cup has placed the Netherlands up against Japan, Tunisia, and the winner of the playoff in March between Ukraine, Sweden, Poland, and Albania.

But how could they perform in these upcoming fixtures? Let’s look at their historical form against these teams to get an idea of how the games could possibly play out.

Japan

These two sides have faced off three times since 2009, with the Netherlands coming out on top twice and the other game ending in a draw.

They’ve only played each other at a World Cup once, however, which was in 2010 with Wesley Sneijder scoring the only goal of the match.

Looking at their most recent game, it took place in 2013, with Japan managing a 2-2 draw after coming back from two goals down. With this being the last time the two sides played each other, Japan should be able to take some confidence into the upcoming fixture.

Tunisia

This matchup is historically a lot closer than you might believe considering Tunisia are currently 40 places behind the Netherlands in the FIFA rankings.

Since 1978, the two nations have played against each other three times, with the Netherlands only winning once and drawing the two most recent fixtures.

Though all meetings were friendly matches, this record is somewhat promising for Tunisia as it shows potential for them to achieve a result.

Ukraine

Ukraine, despite achieving one draw in their three matches against the Netherlands, are yet to put up a real challenge against the Dutch national team.

The Netherlands dominated their first meeting in 2008, winning 3-0, and in their Euros meeting in 2021 they came out as 3-2 victors.

Considering the FIFA rankings put Ukraine 27 places behind, you would imagine the Netherlands will come out on top here should the two sides end up facing each other.

Sweden

Though they haven’t played in nine years, these nations have clashed a total of 25 times, dating back to 1908!

The Netherlands have been the better side for the majority of these games, winning 11 of them. Sweden, however, have had their fair share of victories after overcoming the Dutch eight times.

In their most recent meeting in 2017, the World Cup qualifier saw the Netherlands win 2-0, whereas Sweden’s last victory came in 2011 when they came out on top 3-2.

Despite history slightly favouring the Dutch here, Sweden have clearly got every chance to get a result in this potential matchup.

Poland

The Netherlands and Poland are another two national teams that have had more than a few matchups after playing against each other 22 times.

Poland, despite winning three times, have struggled to get the better of the Dutch, as they’ve lost ten times and drawn nine. Most recently, they faced off against each other in a 2025 World Cup qualifier where they drew 1-1.

Should the two sides meet at the 2026 World Cup, though, Oranje would have to be overall favourites when looking at the past fixtures.

Albania

In the four games the two sides have played against each other, the Netherlands take a clean sweep having won all of them.

Albania have only managed one goal against the Dutch so far, scoring in a Euros qualifier match in 2006 where they lost 2-1.

This should make the Netherlands strong favourites heading into this potential fixture, with Albania yet to be competitive in this matchup.

Iconic Netherlands World Cup memories

Despite the Dutch not managing to win the World Cup, they’ve certainly had a notable number of iconic moments. Especially considering the quality of players that have featured in their teams, they’ve had teams more than capable of producing some special memories.

Here are some of the highlights created to date:

  • Introducing ‘Total Football’ (1974): Regarded as one of the best teams of all time, the Dutch national team of the mid-70s introduced a new way to play football through their attacking philosophy. Emphasising possession and exploiting space, this Netherlands team changed how coaches and teams would play football forever. Unfortunately, despite their great style of play, they lost to West Germany in the Final.

  • Runner-up vs Argentina (1978): After entertaining the world with their total football in 1974, the Netherlands returned to the tournament in 1978 without Johan Cruyff and impressed yet again. Reaching the final for a second time in a row, the Dutch unfortunately lost 3-1 to Argentina.

  • Dennis Bergkamp’s worldie vs Argentina (1998): Arguably one of the greatest World Cup goals of all time, Bergkamp’s stunner against Argentina was truly special. Scored in an important quarter-final game, Bergkamp took a wonderful first touch before losing the defender and smashing the ball into the back of the net.

  • Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s goal vs Uruguay (2010): The semi-final of the 2010 World Cup put Uruguay up against the Netherlands with the match ending in a close 3-2. The scoring was sensationally opened by van Bronckhorst as, 18 minutes in, the left back memorably drilled one into the top corner from 40 yards out.

  • Robin van Persie’s header (2014): Coming up against the defending champions Spain was a tough prospect, but up stepped Robin van Persie. After going 1-0 down, he ran behind the Spanish defence, scoring a stunning diving header to level the game before half-time and help the Netherlands to a 5-1 victory.

The Netherlands’ biggest World Cup wins

Having legendary forwards such as Johan Cruyff, Robin van Persie, and Dennis Bergkamp, the Netherlands national team has always had potent attackers to call upon when required. This has helped take them to some impressive wins throughout their time at the World Cup, so here are the very biggest and best they’ve had so far:

5-0 vs Korea Republic (1998)

The 1998 World Cup group phase had the Netherlands playing Korea Republic, who turned out to be no match for the firepower the Dutch had at their disposal. With so much attacking talent available, Phillip Cocu, Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, Pierre van Hooijdonk, and Ronald de Boer all scored, helping the team cruise to victory.

5-1 vs Spain (2014)

Highlighted by van Persie’s iconic header, the Netherlands demolished the defending champions Spain. With revenge in mind after losing in the 2010 World Cup final to their opponents, the Dutch came from behind to win convincingly. Despite drawing at half-time, two goals from Arjen Robben, a goal from Stefan de Vrij, and another from van Persie sealed a famous win for Oranje.

4-0 vs Argentina (1974)

In what turned out to be a totally dominant Dutch performance, Johan Cruyff got himself on the scoresheet twice and was instrumental to their victory. Argentina were bewildered by this fantastic performance by the Netherlands despite playing reasonably themselves. The South Americans were comprehensively beaten, with Ruud Krol and Johnny Rep also grabbing goals for themselves too.

The Netherlands’ biggest World Cup defeats

Though the Netherlands have had some fantastic teams and players, it doesn’t mean that they’ve been exempt from some disappointing results at the World Cup. Below are some of the heaviest defeats suffered by the Dutch national team:

3-0 vs Czechoslovakia (1938)

In the third ever edition of the World Cup, the Netherlands suffered the biggest defeat they’ve ever had at the tournament when playing Czechoslovakia. The two sides faced off in the round of 16 where the game ended in a close 0-0 after 90 minutes, but Czechoslovakia scored three in extra time to win the game.

3-1 vs Argentina (1978)

Being the second World Cup final that the Netherlands featured in, the team would’ve hoped for redemption come the end of the game. After 90 minutes the game was 1-1, but goals from Mario Kempes and Ricardo Bertoni in extra time sealed their fate, seeing them lose their second final in a row in disappointing fashion.

Though many of these players on the list are retired or no longer involved with the national team, others have a great chance of climbing this list at the 2026 World Cup.

Cody Gakpo has been a crucial player for the Netherlands in recent years, playing a huge role in their 2022 World Cup campaign. As one of their most important forwards, it’d be no surprise to see him jump up a couple of places on the list after the 2026 tournament.

Though he’s yet to score a goal at the World Cup after limited minutes, Xavi Simons is a key player for the Dutch. Should he be able to demonstrate his attacking prowess and technical abilities, we could see him place himself onto this list after the upcoming tournament.

Can the Netherlands win their first World Cup this year?

Although the Netherlands aren’t favourites heading into the 2026 World Cup, they’ve got more than enough talent throughout the side to beat any opposition they come across.

The Dutch have an incredibly strong spine throughout the team, including Virgil van Dijk marshalling the defence, Tijani Reijnders dictating the midfield, and Cody Gakpo posing a goal threat. Combine this with the creative flair of Xavi Simons and other top defenders like Jurrien Timber, Matthijs de Ligt, and Mickey van de Ven, the Netherlands could just have a chance of being tournament winners.
