Germany are among the most successful teams in World Cup history. But how have they achieved elite status? Explore the history of Germany at the World Cup.

The second-most successful team in World Cup history, Germany have reached the semi-finals more often than any other country. Group stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 editions represent by far Germany’s worst run in the World Cup after making five finals between 1982 and 2014.

Let’s take a look at Germany’s rich history at football’s most famous and prestigious competition.

What is Germany’s World Cup record?

The 2026 World Cup marks the 21st time Germany have qualified for the World Cup. The only two World Cups that didn’t feature Germany were 1930 (did not enter) and 1950 (banned from entering).

Across their 20 entries to date, Germany have won 68 out of 121 matches with 21 draws and 23 defeats. They have a +102 goal difference in the tournament with 232 goals scored and 130 conceded – Brazil are the only team with a better goal difference. It’s no surprise that they are perennial contenders in the World Cup odds, and are again among the favourites for 2026.

How many times has Germany won the World Cup?

Germany are four-time world champions, the most recent of which was in 2014. This came after an agonising final loss to Brazil in 2002 and semi-final exits in 2006 and 2010.

Germany holds the record for eight appearances in World Cup finals with four wins and four losses. They have reached the semi-final or better in 13 of their 20 World Cup appearances. Put into context, no other country has reached more than 11 semis.

A recap of Germany’s 2014 World Cup win

After an emphatic win over Portugal on matchday one, Germany were considered one of the tournament favourites in the World Cup winner odds. They suffered a setback when they drew with Ghana, but defeated the United States to ensure they topped their group.

Extra time was needed to beat Algeria before a tight win over France in the knockout rounds. The highlight of their run was a spectacular, historic 7-1 win over hosts Brazil. Records were shattered and Brazilian hearts broken.

That set up a contest with Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final. Cagey and combative, the match was goalless after 90 minutes. However, a strike from Mario Götze avoided a penalty shootout and made Germany world champions for a fourth time.

What is Germany’s record against their group stage opponents?

Germany have only faced Ivory Coast once. They drew 2-2 in a friendly in 2009 scored both of Germany’s goals.

Meanwhile, Ecuador and Germany have only matched up twice. Both matches – a meeting in the 2006 World Cup and a friendly seven years later – perhaps unsurprisingly ended in German victories.

Germany have never faced Curacao before. Managed by Dick Advocaat until recently, The Blue Wave are competing in their first World Cup.

Iconic German World Cup memories

Naturally, a country with four World Cup wins has plenty of iconic memories.

Hammering Brazil in Belo Horizonte

Leading 5-0 inside the first half an hour, Germany blew Brazil away in Belo Horizonte in the 2014 World Cup semi-final. The host nation didn’t know what had hit them and ultimately suffered a humiliating 7-1 defeat on home soil.

The ‘Miracle of Bern’

Germany fell 2-0 down in the first eight minutes of the 1954 World Cup final against Hungary. Heavily favoured after beating Germany 8-3 earlier in the tournament, Hungary were led by the incomparable Ferenc Puskás. Max Morlock made it 2-1 in the 10th minute followed by Helmut Rahn’s equaliser in the 18th minute. Rahn completed the comeback with a dramatic winner in the dying stages of normal time.

Return After Reunification

In 1994, Germany played in their first World Cup after reunification. Their campaign began with a 1-0 win over Bolivia in Chicago, with Jürgen Klinsmann scoring the winner. The significance of playing as one nation after the fall of the Berlin Wall cannot be overstated.

Final Matchup with Bitter Rivals

The best-ever Germany team met the best-ever Netherlands team in the 1974 World Cup final. Despite trailing early through a penalty, the Germans battled back to win 2-1 and prevent Johan Cruyff and co. from becoming world champions. In the process, Germany became the first country to hold the European Championship and the World Cup at the same time.

Breaking French Hearts

France and Germany had played a tense 90 minutes in the 1982 World Cup semi-final. When France took a 3-1 lead in extra time, though, it looked like Germany’s World Cup campaign had come to an end. Fear not, the ever-competitive Germans roared back with two goals of their own in extra time to force a penalty shootout, which they won 5-4.

Germany’s biggest World Cup wins

Germany’s biggest World Cup win was an 8-0 drubbing of Saudi Arabia in 2002. Headlined by a hat-trick from Miroslav Klose, it is one of the largest margins of victory in World Cup history.

The Germans have also had two wins by six goals with a 7-1 hammering of Brazil in 2014 and a 6-0 win over Mexico in 1978.

In 1954, Germany had five-goal wins with a 7-2 win against Turkey and a 6-1 win against Austria. They also beat Switzerland 5-0 in 1966.

Who has made the most World Cup appearances for Germany?

Lothar Matthäus, Germany’s most-capped player with 150 appearances, holds the record for the most World Cup appearances with 25. The Tank made his first World Cup appearance in 1982 and went on to appear in four further tournaments.

He won the World Cup in 1990 after being a runner-up in 1982 and 1986.
