Champions League semi final stats

Both teams are different animals at home, and can score convincing wins after disappointing first leg defeats

Lionel Messi grabbed the headlines on what was a thrilling midweek of Champions League football. As the second legs head to Munich and Madrid, however, it is the two home teams that can make all the noise and recover from their first leg deficits. Bayern are priced at 7/5 whilst Real start as marginal 8/13 favourites. Both represent great value.

Bayern Munich vs Barcelona

  1. Bayern Munich have picked up 18% more points at home than they have away this season. This includes remaining unbeaten at the Allianz Arena in Europe all season. Contrastingly Barcelona have been statistically weaker away from home this season. Last time they travelled to Munich they were destroyed 4-0. Back a home win at 7/5.
  2. Munich have scored 57.1% of their goals in the second half, and conceded 53.3% of the time after the half time whistle. Back the second half to contain the most goals at 21/10.
  3. Barcelona have failed to score in 17% of their away fixtures this season, whilst Munich have the meanest defence in the Bundesliga, keeping a clean sheet 68% of the time. Another shut out for the Germans is excellent value at 13/5.
  4. Robert Lewandowski is the third top scorer in the Bundesliga, and Bayern’s top scorer in Europe. Likely to be deployed as a lone striker for the second leg, he looks the most likely to open the scoring at 9/2.

Real Madrid vs Juventus

  1. Real Madrid have dropped just four points in the league at home, and won every Champions League match at the Bernabeu. Juventus on the other hand have won just 53% of their away games. Madrid are a safe bet at 8/13.
  2. Madrid have won a league high 11.8% of their home games by a 3-1 score line. They have also repeated this score twice in Europe. 12/1 on another 3-1 victory looks overpriced.
  3. Cristiano Ronaldo is second on the Champions League’s all-time goal scoring charts and has bagged an eye watering twelve goals in his last ten games. He scored in the away leg and it would be a huge surprise if he didn’t bag again at 3/4.
  4. Madrid have scored in every single game they have played at the Bernabeu this campaign, whilst Juve have failed to score in just 12% of their games. Back both teams to score in this one at 17/20.
