The EFL season is back under way this weekend – and treats us to a fine array of games from across the leagues on week one.
While it’s dangerous to read too much into the opening weekend, this is the first serious indication we get of each team’s level.
Lincoln make their Championship debut against highly-fancied Middlesbrough, Leicester City face a tricky midlands derby at Notts County, while two of the promotion favourites go head-to-head when York City take on Bristol Rovers.
Two of those matches feature in our football betting acca, which also includes other selections from League One and League Two.

Middlesbrough to beat Lincoln City
Most Championship betting picks won’t be this short – but, even though it’s listed first, we can boost the combined odds from the other selections with what should be a comfortable home win.
Boro are tipped to go very well this season, having used the funds raised from selling Hayden Hackney to Everton by signing top keeper Radek Vitek, stroller Will Lankshear and several others.
Kim Hellberg’s side faded at the end of last season, and lost a play-off final they were in only due to remarkable circumstances, but look the business this time around.
They beat Wrexham 1-0 in the Carabao Cup last week, Lankshear bagging the winner, while Championship debutants Lincoln City are far more likely to pick up the points they need at Sincil Bank.
Boro won their last two home games of the standard 2025/26 campaign and should dominate here.
Cambridge United to beat Wigan Athletic
Cambridge are newly-promoted under Neil Harris and will fancy their chances of getting off to a strong start against struggling opposition.
The U’s beat Barnet at home in the Carabao Cup last week and their form at the Abbey Stadium will be crucial, after their home record – 15 wins, six draws and two defeats – was the best in League Two last term.
By contrast, Wigan appear to be a club on the slide, with little more expected than a mid-table finish or, potentially, a battle against relegation this season.
They are perfect opposition for Cambridge, whose up-and-at-em style suits an opening home game against average visitors.
Leyton Orient to beat Sheffield Wednesday
These are two teams who could both go well this year, but at the price Orient look a decent bet to do the business.
Richie Wellens’ side have recruited really smartly this summer, Jaze Kabia the stand-out recruit from Grimsby, and can put an awkward 2025/26 behind them.
Orient never got going last term but had been play-off finalists the year before and still have the right people in charge – Wellens has EFL promotion experience – to hit that level again.
They are worth a bet as outsiders against Sheffield Wednesday, who themselves have little to grumble about and are braced for a fresh start under new ownership.
They are still in the early stages of knitting a new squad together, though, and their push for promotion is more likely to grow as the season plays out.
Cheltenham Town to beat Rotherham United
Rotherham have a lot of work to do to halt the slide after relegation from League One, and this looks like an awkward first assignment.
The Millers were hammered 4-1 by West Brom in the cup last week and, more tellingly, lost 13 of their last 15 away games of last season.
A trip to Cheltenham is not for the faint-hearted.
Steve Cotterill’s side may not be the most technical but will make life difficult and have a decent home record to fall back on.
They only lost four of their first 16 home games under Cotterill last season, winning eight, before an end-of-season dip once safety was confirmed.
They will fancy their chances against vulnerable opposition, managed by Alex Bruce on his senior debut as a coach.
Bristol Rovers to beat York City
These are expected to be two power-houses at League Two level this season, but one team seems in better shape than the other heading into the opener.
Rovers won 10 of their last 12 games of last season as they stormed clear of danger under Steve Evans, who has won multiple promotions from this league and has reinforced the squad in typical fashion again this summer.
No task is going to faze Evans, who has seen it all and will have his side set up for victory.
York, on the other hand, are in good shape as a club but made the unpopular call to replace manager Stuart Maynard with Scott Lindsay on the eve of the new season.
Supporters chanted ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ at Lindsay during the 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crawley Town last week and the home atmosphere could turn ugly again if the Gas get off to a decent start.
