How to read Stayers’ Hurdle odds

You will often find Stayers’ Hurdle betting odds in fractional terms. This means each horse is assigned a fraction representing its chances of winning. The smaller the fraction, the more likely the horse is considered to win the race. However, a correct bet placed on a horse with lower (or longer) odds of winning will earn you more money than a correct bet placed on one of the favourites.

To see how much you could win from a fractional bet, divide your stake by the number on the right-hand side of the fraction, then, multiply the result by the number on the left-hand side. This will show you how much you could win from a correct bet, plus your original stake.

You can learn more about how to read fractional odds, or simply use our betting calculator to instantly see how much you could win from a wager.

Example of a Stayers’ Hurdle bet

To give a real-world example, let’s say that Teahupoo has 7/4 odds of winning, while Bob Olinger has odds of 15/2.

A correct £10 bet placed on Teahupoo would return £17.50 (10 ÷ 4 = 2.5, then 2.5 x 7 = 17.5), plus your original stake for a total return of £27.50.

Meanwhile, if you placed the same bet on Bob Olinger, you could earn £75 (10 ÷ 2 = 5, then 5 x 15 = 75), plus your original stake, totalling £85.

Here, you can see that the same amount of money can earn you different returns depending on which horse you choose, but higher rewards also come with higher risks.

Different types of Stayers’ Hurdle betting

If you’re looking to place a bet on this year’s Stayers’ Hurdle, there are many popular bet types to choose from. Here are just a few of the wagers you can place on the race:

Accumulator

An accumulator bet, also known as an ‘acca’, packages multiple predictions into one wager. For example, you could bet on the Stayers’ Hurdle alongside your other favourite races on Day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival. The twist is that the bet only pays out if all of your predictions are correct, so there’s an added risk, but the rewards could be even greater than placing single bets.

Winner

The most common type of Stayers’ Hurdle bet is a wager on the winner. If your chosen horse doesn’t place first, you won’t receive a payout, but a correct prediction could give you a huge return, especially if you correctly choose an outsider.

To place

Are you confident in a horse’s ability, but not sure it will win its chosen race? Consider betting on your horse to place. This means that if your pick finishes towards the top of the field (typically the top 3 or 4, depending on the number of competitors), you’ll receive a payout even if your horse narrowly misses out on first place.

Each-way

Each-way bets combine two wagers into one handy package. Your first bet is wagered on a horse to win, while your second bet is wagered on the same horse to place. This means you’ll receive an insurance payout if your horse places well but doesn’t win. At the same time, though, your earnings could receive a huge boost if your horse finishes in first, as both bets will be correct!

Ante-post

Ante-post Stayers’ Hurdle bets are placed far in advance of the race, before the final competitors are announced. This means that your chosen horse may withdraw from the event closer to its start time, which adds extra uncertainty to the bet, increasing your payout for a correct prediction.

Who to bet on in the Cheltenham Stayers’ Hurdle

When betting on the Stayers’ Hurdle, you’ll need to choose your racehorse wisely, as the best competitors need excellent endurance, strong jumping skills, and explosive power. It’s important to research the jockeys, trainers, and horses ahead of a race, so make sure you brush up on all the Stayers’ Hurdle trends throughout the years to find out what makes a winner.
