Each-way Cheltenham tips for day four

13:20 Triumph Hurdle – WINNER: APOLON DE CHARNIE

Gordon Elliott’s HIGHLAND CRYSTAL / took the scalp of Tuesday’s Fred Winter winner Saratoga when scoring at Naas last month and, whilst more will be required if she’s to land the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle, she brings the same rating into the race as market leader Selma De Vary and represents far better value at around three times the price.

The selection is unbeaten in three starts under Rules, all of them hurdle races, and she’s shown significant improvement each time, running to Racing Post Ratings of 112 when scoring by 12-lengths at Punchestown, 116 when landing a Listed event at Newbury and 129 when edging out the aforementioned Saratoga 34 days ago.

Marcus Buckland

14:00 County Hurdle – WINNER: WILFUL

The addition of first-time cheekpieces may eke out enough improvement from the Nicky Henderson-trained JOYEUSE / to see her overcome a mark of 135 in a typically competitive County Hurdle.

The seven-year-old, who finished a creditable sixth behind Lossiemouth (beaten 13.5 lengths) in the Grade 1 Mares’ Hurdle at last year’s Festival, ran respectably in a couple of chase outings earlier this season, but she’s clearly at her most effective over hurdles and shaped with significant promise in a Grade 2 behind the re-opposing Ooh Betty at Ascot in January.

She finished last of the four runners on that occasion, but she was only beaten four-lengths and would likely have gone close to winning but for making a bad mistake at the last. The handicapper has dropped her 3lb since and that gives her strong claims.

15:20 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle – WINNER: JOHNNY’S JURY

The Albert Bartlett has seen THEDEVILUNO  /  steadily shorten in the market over the last few weeks since he was put up ante‑post after his win at Doncaster. He was unsuited by the steady pace when beaten by Doctor Steinberg at Navan, and while I was hoping the Doc would head for the Turners, the greater test of stamina here should allow Thedeviluno to turn the tables. Plenty of potential lurkers could improve for the step up in trip, but Thedeviluno may have a touch of class.

16:00 Cheltenham Gold Cup – WINNER: GAELIC WARRIOR

FIREFOX /  arrives at Cheltenham as a steadily improving chaser for Gordon Elliott and could represent solid each-way value in the Gold Cup.

The eight-year-old has progressed nicely over fences, particularly as his stamina has been tested over longer distances.

Earlier in his chasing career he showed plenty of promise over shorter trips, but his performances have improved notably as he has stepped up in distance.

His fourth-place finish in the Irish Gold Cup last time out was a particularly encouraging run. Competing against some of the best staying chasers in training on his first start over three miles, he stayed on well and showed he belongs at the highest level.

That performance suggested the Gold Cup trip will suit him even better and there could be improvement to come.

Lee Sharp

17:20 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle

In the Martin Pipe, SA FUREUR  /  appeals as a speculative play, having twice been sent off favourite at the Festival in the past. Gordon Elliott targets this race and saddles four runners, with Wendrock also a plausible candidate at a decent price. He was winless in the first half of this year’s Festival, but the same was true last year until Wodhooh – favourite for the Mares’ on Thursday – won this very race.
