Uncover the USA’s history at the World Cup! Discover their record at the tournament, biggest wins, iconic memories, most capped players and top goalscorers!
As one of the original competitors for the inaugural 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, the USA have had a long-standing involvement at the tournament.
But since the first edition of the tournament, what’s their overall record at the competition, and how do they compare to other nations? Below, we’ll go over the history of the USA at the World Cup, delving into their record, most iconic memories, top goalscorers, players with the most appearances, and more!
What is the USA’s World Cup record?
The 2026 World Cup represents the USA’s 12th appearance at the tournament, being their second qualification in a row after missing out on Russia 2018. Though regularly qualifying since 1990, they had a 40-year period after 1950 where they didn’t feature at the competition at all!
The USA have played a total of 37 games across their time at the World Cup, winning nine, drawing eight, and losing 20, giving them a win percentage of 24.32%.
They may not have won the tournament yet, but the USA have had some impressive runs, finishing as semi-finalists in 1930 and quarter-finalists in 2002.
What is the USA’s record against their group stage opponents?
The 2026 World Cup group stage puts the USA up against Paraguay, Australia, and the winner of the play-off match between either Turkey, Slovakia, Romania, and Kosovo.
But how might the USA perform against their opponents in these upcoming group games?
Well, we can get an idea of this by looking into their historical records against the other national sides.
Paraguay
In total, the USA have faced off against Paraguay nine times, with the first being a World Cup match in 1930. This game was a group stage match and ended 3-0 to the USA, being one of their biggest ever wins at the tournament.
The USA also hold the advantage in this head-to-head, having won five matches, drawn two, and lost two. Most recently, the two teams played each other in a friendly match in 2025, where the USA won the game 2-1.
Australia
The USA and Australia have only played each other on four occasions, with the matchup being a fairly even one. Winning twice, drawing once, and losing once, the USA have just about got the better of Australia on the whole.
This only changed recently, however, with a friendly game taking place in the back end of 2025 ending 2-1 to the USA. With this victory, it tipped the balance of their record against each other in favour of the USA.
Turkey
Looking at previous encounters between the USA and Turkey, their record indicates that the two nations are evenly matched when facing each other on the football pitch. With both sides having two wins, one draw and two losses, it’s hard to say who might win if they went on to play each other at the World Cup.
If you looked at their most recent game against each other in the summer of 2025, though, it would indicate that Turkey has the upper hand, as they won the friendly match 2-1. Though the USA took the lead in the first minute, Turkey came back to win through goals by Arder Guler and Kerem Akturkoglu.
Iconic USA World Cup memories
The USA have already made some special memories at the tournament in their 11 appearances ahead of the 2026 World Cup. So, whether it’s special goals, or impressive results, let’s cover their most memorable moments at the competition:
England upset (1950): The group stage of the 1950 World Cup placed the USA up against England, who were heavy favourites and even touted as one of the more likely sides to win the tournament. The USA side, though made up of part-time players, managed to grab a headed goal before half-time through Joe Gaetjens. So, despite England’s pressure, possession, and chances, they didn’t manage to put the ball in the back of the net thanks to some goalkeeping heroics from Frank Borghi.
Heading to the quarter-finals (2002): The 2002 round of 16 had the USA facing off against Mexico in a bid to reach the quarter-finals. The USA showcased a real determination in the match, with them achieving their first World Cup clean sheet since beating England in 1950. Brian McBride scored just eight minutes into the game to give them the lead, with Landon Donovan heading home in the second half to extend their advantage. The result sent the USA to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1930, making it a monumental occasion.
Late drama vs Algeria (2010): On the brink of elimination from the World Cup, the USA played against Algeria in the final group game of the 2010 tournament. Though the USA threatened multiple times throughout the game, they couldn’t find a way to break down the Algerian defence. Just as it looked like they hadn’t got anything left, they had a counterattack in the 92nd minute of the game. Landon Donovan was able to score from six yards out, following a parried shot by Algeria’s goalkeeper, sending the USA to the round of 16, and making the American fans burst into manic celebration.
Jermaine Jones’ strike vs Portugal (2014): Placed into the ‘group of death’ with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, the eventual winners Germany, and Ghana, the USA were up against it. Despite getting knocked out of the group, their 2-2 draw against Portugal held a real standout moment. After conceding early on, the USA were 1-0 down and needing a goal, but in the 64th minute, up steps Jermaine Jones. With a thunderous strike after cutting inside, he rifled the ball into the net from outside the box, leaving the goalkeeper planted on the spot, and completely helpless!
Eric Wynalda’s free kick vs Switzerland (1994): At their home tournament, the USA were looking to impress in their opening match against Switzerland. Though they may not have won the game, they were still able to give their fans something special to celebrate. Going 1-0 down in the 40th minute, Eric Wynalda had the perfect response to get the USA back into the game only five minutes later. From 28 yards out, Wynalda’s unstoppable strike went right into the top left corner, levelling the game before halftime. Even more importantly, this goal gave the USA a crucial point to help them get out of the group stage.
USA’s biggest World Cup wins
They may have only had nine wins at the World Cup so far, but this doesn’t mean that they haven’t managed to obtain some convincing victories over their time at the tournament. Here are their biggest and best World Cup wins ahead of the 2026 tournament:
3-0 vs Belgium (1930)
The USA kicked off their first ever World Cup campaign with a bang, defeating Belgium convincingly in the group stage. Goals from Bart McGhee, Tom Florie, and Bert Patenaude helped the USA to victory, setting the stage for their best run at the tournament to date.
3-0 vs Paraguay (1930)
Containing the first-ever hat-trick in World Cup history, this game was an extremely special one for both the USA and the wider tournament as well. Being the second group game of the 1930 competition, the USA were able to carry on their strong start, with Bert Patenaude’s goals spearheading the charge. The dominant performance from the USA confirmed their place in the next round and led to their best finish, the semi-finals.
USA’s biggest World Cup defeats
As much as they’ve earned some great wins, the USA have also suffered some damning defeats as well. So, below, we’ll go over the biggest losses they’ve had at the World Cup so far:
7-1 Italy (1934)
Making it to the semi-finals at the previous tournament, the USA would’ve been hoping to exercise the demons of their loss to Argentina. Coming across Italy in the round of 16, however, they were unable to accomplish that goal. Italy’s Angelo Schiavio scored a hat-trick in the game, setting the pace for their attacking dominance. The USA managed to pull one back through Aldo Donelli in the 57th minute, but Italy’s mercilessness continued as they went on to score a further four goals.
6-1 vs Argentina (1930)
Though impressing in the tournament earlier on, Argentina in the semi-final proved to be just too much for the USA. Argentina secured a dominant victory over the USA, with players such as Guillermo Stabile and Carlos Peucelle being vital to the performance. Both Stabile and Peucelle managed to get on the scoresheet twice, with the Argentinian attack tormenting the USA’s defence. Jim Brown managed the only consolation for the USA, grabbing a goal in the 89th minute.

Can the USA win their first World Cup this year?
The USA are far from favourites to become the 2026 World Cup tournament winner, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t compete with the other top national sides. With a history of creating some upsets in the competition, who knows what sort of run they could go on?
Looking at their team, they have a wealth of experience from Europe’s top leagues, such as attacking midfielders like Brenden Aaronson for Leeds United and Malik Tillman for Bayer Leverkusen, alongside striker Folarin Balogun for Monaco.
Adding the fact that they’re co-hosting the tournament, the team will have that extra bit of motivation to perform for their fans, meaning anything is possible.
