A History of Scotland at the World Cup

What is Scotland’s World Cup record? Read here for Scotland’s history at the World Cup, their biggest wins, top goal scorers, and many more stats.

The country that brought us Kenny Dalglish, Denis Law, Graeme Souness, and Alan Hansen hasn’t exactly been a regular at the World Cup in recent years. Steve Clarke’s team made history by qualifying for the 2026 edition, though, which is Scotland’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years.

However, if you’re backing the Scots to put up a fight this time around – and perhaps even surprise us all – discover the latest World Cup betting odds for all their matches.

What is Scotland’s World Cup record?

Scotland 9998/1 have played 23 World Cup matches. They’ve won just four, drawn seven, and lost 12. Scoring 25 and conceding 41 leaves Scotland with an all-time World Cup goal difference of -16. However, with big games ahead in 2026, they’ll have all eyes on the future.

How many times has Scotland qualified for the World Cup?

Scotland have qualified for the World Cup on nine occasions. Prior to their spectacular qualifying run to qualify for the 2026 edition, the Scots hadn’t played in a World Cup since 1998 when they collected one out of a possible nine points and were knocked out at the group stage.

Scotland have never made it to the knockout rounds at the World Cup. They missed out on goal difference in 1974, 1978, and 1982. The 1974 tournament was the closest they’ve come to progressing, as they were pipped to a knockout round spot by Brazil by one goal.

When did Scotland last qualify for the World Cup?

Before qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Scotland last reached the World Cup in 1998. “The Rockafeller Skank” by Fatboy Slim was top of the charts and Tony Blair had been Prime Minister for little over a year when Scotland last played a World Cup match.

Colin Hendry skippered Scotland, who were managed by Craig Brown. Defeats to Morocco and Brazil ensured Scotland didn’t qualify for the round of 16.

It’s been a long, painful wait for Scotland fans. Entire generations have never seen their country compete at a World Cup. Excitement is palpable among Scottish football fans, with a squad capable of causing an upset or two this summer.

Just as in 1998, the Scots are once again matched up with Brazil and Morocco in the group stage. They will also face Haiti, one of the weakest teams in the competition.

What is Scotland’s record against their group stage opponents?

Scotland have never beaten Brazil. They have two draws and eight defeats in 10 matches, but have only faced the Brazilians once since their defeat at the 1998 World Cup. That match came in a friendly back in 2011, with Neymar scoring a brace for the South Americans.

The only previous meeting between Scotland and Morocco was the Moroccans 3-0 win at the 1998 World Cup. The Atlas Lions were semi-finalists at the World Cup four years ago and runners-up at this year’s AFCON. They boast a highly experienced squad, including Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat, and Youssef En-Nesyri.

Scotland and Haiti have never matched up. This summer will be Haiti’s second World Cup appearance, they have exited at the group stage in the last three editions of the Gold Cup. Scotland will meet Haiti in their first game of the tournament, with Steve Clarke’s side the favourites in the World Cup odds.

Iconic Scottish World Cup memories

Despite winning just four World Cup matches, Scotland have still produced some memorable World Cup moments. Here are a few of our favourites:

Unbeaten in 1974

Paired with Brazil, a talented Yugoslavian team, and Zaire, Scotland managed to go unbeaten in the group phase of the 1974 World Cup.

It wasn’t enough to progress to the knockout rounds, but it still represented an impressive achievement. A 2-0 win over Zaire was followed by a goalless draw with Brazil and a 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia.

Spectacular Qualifying Run for 2026

Following a stellar run in Euro 2024 qualifying, which included a win over Spain, Scotland were exemplary in World Cup qualifying. A draw with Denmark on matchday one was followed by three consecutive wins.

Matchday five saw a setback with a 3-2 loss to Greece in Piraeus, but Clarke’s men showed resilience to bounce back three days later.

Needing a win to guarantee their place in the World Cup, Scotland looked like they had blown their chance when Patrick Dorgu made it 2-2 in the 81st minute. Roared on by a packed Hampden Park, Kieran Tierney and Kenneth McLean scored in injury time to book Scotland’s place in the 2026 World Cup group stage.

Defeating the Dutch

The Netherlands entered the 1978 World Cup as one of the favourites, despite Johan Cruyff’s retirement. Runners-up in 1974 and en route to the final in 1978, the Oranje faced Scotland in the group phase.

When Rob Rensenbrink gave the Dutch the lead from the spot in the first half, it looked like the game was only heading in one direction. Kenny Dalglish equalised before half-time, though, followed by a brace from Archie Gemmill to put the Scots 3-1 up. Johnny Rep made it 3-2 but Scotland clung on for a historic win.

Scotland’s biggest World Cup wins

Scotland’s biggest World Cup win numerically was a 5-2 victory over New Zealand in 1982 with John Wark scoring a brace.

The Scots have only had three other World Cup wins. One of the others was a 2-0 victory against Zaire, with Peter Lorimer and Joe Jordan getting on the scoresheet.

Defeating the Kiwis by three goals was Scotland’s biggest margin of victory, but their most significant win was the 3-2 triumph over the Netherlands in 1978. Their other World Cup win was a 2-1 triumph over Sweden in 1990, which was sandwiched between defeats to Costa Rica and Brazil.

Scotland’s biggest World Cup defeats

A 7-0 loss to Uruguay in 1954 is Scotland’s biggest World Cup defeat. A 4-1 loss to Brazil in 1982 and a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in 1990 are the only other matches where Scotland have lost by more than two goals.

Who has made the most World Cup appearances for Scotland?

Thirteen players have made five or more World Cup appearances for Scotland. Opportunities to play at the World Cup have been few and far between for Scottish footballers, and failure to make it out of the group stage means players have been restricted to three appearances per tournament.

Darren Fletcher and Kenny Miller are both in the top 10 in total caps for Scotland, but neither played in the World Cup, for instance.

Who has scored the most World Cup goals for Scotland?

Joe Jordan is Scotland’s top World Cup goal scorer with three in seven appearances. Archie Gemmill, Kenny Dalglish, and John Wark are the only other Scots with multiple World Cup goals.

Andrew McCall and Maurice Johnston are the only Scots to score goals in a World Cup win since 1982. Craig Burley’s goal against Norway in 1998 earned Scotland a draw, which was their only point of the tournament.
