Heading into the 2026 tournament, England have a new manager in charge, Thomas Tuchel. The German has big expectations, having come into the role with an impressive CV. This includes winning top honours such as the Champions League, Bundesliga, Supercup, Club World Cup, and Ligue 1.
After reaching the semi-final in 2018 and the quarter-final in 2022, can England now go that extra mile under new management and lift silverware again? With a record such as his, especially in cup competitions, England can be expected to challenge strongly in the summer and are one of the favourites to become World Cup tournament winners.
Which England manager has the best World Cup record?
Looking at the records of all England managers at the World Cup, evidently the most successful is Sir Alf Ramsey. After winning the tournament in 1966, he forever etched himself into the history of the World Cup and into England folklore. Nobody has yet matched his achievement with the Three Lions, placing him into a category of his own. Ramsey also took England to the quarter-finals in the following 1970 tournament, something which only four other managers have accomplished.
The managers with the next best records on this list have both ended their World Cup campaigns in fourth place. This is the case for Sir Bobby Robson in 1990 and Gareth Southgate in 2018, with the pair losing in the semi-finals before facing defeat in the third-place play-off match. Both Robson and Southgate also managed to lead England to quarter-finals in 1986 and 2022 respectively, further solidifying their positive records whilst in charge.
Sven-Goran Eriksson then managed England to two quarter-finals in 2002 and 2006, finishing both sixth and seventh in these tournaments. Finally, Sir Walter Winterbottom led England to the quarter-finals twice as well, accomplishing this in 1954 and 1962, placing seventh and eighth in these campaigns.
Which England manager has managed at the most World Cups?
The manager who’s taken England to the most World Cup tournaments is Sir Walter Winterbottom. He managed the Three Lions at four different campaigns between 1950 and 1962! This makes his longevity stand out as it’s twice the number of times any other manager has coached England at the World Cup.
Managers who’ve taken England to two World Cups include Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Bobby Robson, Sven-Goran Eriksson, and Gareth Southgate.
