Now that you’re aware of teams with the most World Cup winners, let’s take a more in-depth look at the clubs at the upper end of the list. Below are the top five clubs with the most World Cup winning players:

1.     Juventus

As the club with the most World Cup champions, Juventus top the rankings with 27 of their players accomplishing the feat so far. Looking back at the history of their World Cup winning players, there are a few years that contribute a good portion of them. As their winners are spread out over seven separate campaigns, it also demonstrates a consistent ability to attract top-class players.

Italy’s victory in 1934 stands out as a year that produced many of Juventus’ winners, with nine players out of Italy’s squad playing for the Old Lady.

Following this, Juventus had no winners for another 48 years. This period was the same time it took for the Italian national team to lift the trophy again too, showing their reliance on home-grown talent.

However, the wait for nearly half a century then produced their next most successful year. The 1982 World Cup saw Juventus manage to have six players in the winning Italian squad, featuring legends such as the 40-year-old Dino Zoff in goal and clinical Paolo Rossi up front.

Interestingly, it wasn’t until the 1998 tournament that Juventus had any non-Italian World Cup winners. France’s victory before the turn of the century saw Didier Deschamps and Zinedine Zidane become the first foreign winners of the competition for the Old Lady. The 2018 and 2022 tournaments also saw more overseas players lift the trophy, totalling five in Juventus’ history.

2.     Bayern Munich

Coming in a close second place is the German juggernaut, Bayern Munich. 24 of their players have tasted victory at the World Cup and, like Juventus, they’ve also managed to have winners across seven separate campaigns.

The two years that saw the most Bayern players win the tournament were in 1974 and 2014. Unsurprisingly, West Germany and Germany won in these years, and both campaigns involved seven of Bayern’s players.

Stars like the legendary defender Franz Beckenbauer and prolific striker Gerd Müller spearheaded the 1974 victory, with world-class keeper Manuel Neuer and midfield maestro Bastian Schweinsteiger leading the triumph in 2014.

The 1990 campaign also saw a good number of Die Roten players win the World Cup. West Germany became champions in this tournament too, with their squad containing six Bayern Munich players.

It wasn’t until the 1994 World Cup that Bayern saw their first overseas player win the tournament. After Brazil won their fourth tournament, 29-year-old right-back Jorginho made history for the German giants and became the first foreign player to accomplish this achievement.

With Germany regularly featuring among the World Cup betting favourites at every tournament, it would be no surprise to see Bayern – a constant source of talent for the national team – topping this list in the future.

3.     Internazionale (Inter Milan)

Completing the top three teams, Inter Milan are the final club with more than 20 World Cup winning players. Throughout the history of the tournament, they’ve had 21 players lift the trophy, with their winners being largely spread out across different campaigns. Inter have had players win the tournament in eight separate World Cups – the second most out of all teams.

The 1938 and 1982 tournaments both had five Inter Milan players become champions, with the ‘34 campaign producing four. Being an Italian club, it’s no surprise that in each of these three years Italy were victorious.

The Nerazzurri were home to several important players in these campaigns, including the likes of striker Alessandro Altobelli in 1982. He managed to score the all-important third goal in the final for Italy, sealing the win over West Germany.

Similarly to Juventus, there was a 48-year gap between them having any World Cup winners in their team (1938-1982). Again, matching when Italy won the tournament, it starts to show a wider pattern of having a heavy focus on home-grown players and talents in their teams.

Germany’s victory in 1990 signified the first year that Inter Milan had foreign players win the World Cup. The Italian team helped to provide a solid foundation for Germany’s triumph, providing captain and legendary midfielder Lothar Matthäus, striker Jürgen Klinsmann, and even the winning goalscorer in the final Andreas Brehme.

4.     Roma

Placing in fourth as the club with the most World Cup winning players is another Serie A outfit, Roma. They’ve managed to have a total of 17 players win the competition across nine different tournaments – the most out of any team in the world. Similarly to the other Italian teams in the top five, Roma also had players featuring in all of Italy’s World Cup wins.

The strongest era for Roma at the World Cup came in 1938, where they had four players in the team. Defender Pietro Serantoni was one of the best representatives for the club as he started the final against Hungary and helped Italy to a 4-2 victory.

Like Inter Milan, Roma’s first overseas winners of the World Cup came in 1990 when Germany became champions. Their team featured two players for I Giallorossi, with both Rudi Völler and Thomas Berthold starting in the final against Argentina. Völler contributed three goals in the group stage, with Berthold being a defensive rock and playing every minute of the tournament.

5.     Santos

Finally, rounding out the top five is Brazilian outfit Santos, with the club having had 15 World Cup winners; their ability to produce top talents for the Brazilian national team has proven to be successful over time. And as a team in Brazil, it’s unsurprising that all their winners came when the Seleção won the tournament.

Unlike the longevity that other teams in the top five have had with their winners, Santos’ winning players have only come in three World Cups over 12 years – 1958, 1962, and 1970. In these campaigns, they had three, seven, and five players involved respectively. This shows how they were able to consistently provide players during Brazil’s golden era at the World Cup.

One of the greatest players of all time, Pelé, played for Santos throughout all these tournaments and helped establish Brazil as the best World Cup team ever. Santos can be given much of the credit for helping Pelé to become a part of the national team at such a young age, with him becoming the youngest goalscorer in a World Cup final during the 1958 tournament.

Though Santos players dominated the national team in this period, they’re yet to have a World Cup winner since. This is likely led by a lot of their best talents leaving to play in Europe. Considering there’s lots of competition from players in the top five leagues, it makes it much harder for Santos to have World Cup winners in the present day.

Though runners-up have lost the World Cup, they still had to play an amazing tournament to get there. This means that each team here still had elite players in their teams, but they just fell short of success instead.

Again, Bayern Munich feature highly, topping the list this time around with 20 runners-up. These players mostly come from matches where West Germany and Germany lost in the final, such as in 1966 (two), 1982 (three), 1986 (four), and 2002 (four).

Serie A outfits AC Milan and Inter come closely behind with 18 and 16 runners-up respectively. Most of Milan’s players come from Italy’s World Cup final defeats in 1970 (three) and 1994 (seven), which is a somewhat similar case for Inter. The Nerazzurri had a combined seven players on the losing side in Italy’s 1970 (six) and 1994 (one) defeats but showed an overall trend of featuring more internationals in their teams than their same city rivals.

Finally, because of the Netherlands’ back-to-back losses in the 1974 and 1978, alongside their 2010 loss to Spain, Ajax have also had their fair share of runners-up. With six players in the 1974 tournament and three apiece in 1978 and 2010, the Dutch club have had 12 players fall short of international glory.

As the table highlights, Arsenal are the English club with the most World Cup winners (seven). The most they ever achieved in a year came in 2014, with Mesut Özil, Lukas Podolski, and Per Mertesacker representing the club on the international stage. The three Germans took Arsenal above Liverpool, who were already on five.

Chelsea are then in a close second, tied with Liverpool and Manchester United. The Blues managed to reach their total of five players in 2018, with both Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kanté playing a role in France winning the tournament. This brought them level with Liverpool, who reached their total of five in 2010 after Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina became champions with Spain. Manchester United only recently made it to five World Cup winners after Lisandro Martínez won in 2022 with Argentina.

Liverpool have had the most runners-up from England, with players just falling short in the 2002 (one), 2010 (two), 2018 (one), and 2022 (one) tournaments. Manchester City follow them up with four, having had players miss out on World Cup victory in 2010 (one) and 2014 (three).

Then Arsenal and Manchester United both have three players who’ve finished as runner-up. Arsenal had one player finish second in each of the 2006, 2010, and 2022 tournaments, with the Red Devils having their players be denied glory in 2006 (two) and 2022 (one).

Clubs with the most World Cup winners in the Premier League era

Looking into more recent history, let’s see which clubs and leagues have had the most World Cup winners in the more modern age of football. Here, we’ll be reviewing every World Cup tournament from 1994, marking the first edition since the Premier League began, and discussing how players from teams in the top five leagues have performed.

Premier League – 21 winners

Starting off by looking at the Premier League, teams here have managed 21 winners across the last three and a half decades. Though it may sound like a decent number, it’s actually the lowest out of the top five leagues!

Similarly to the all-time list for English teams, Arsenal are on top with six of their seven winners occurring in this time. Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit were victors in 1998, followed by Cesc Fàbregas in 2010, and Özil, Podolski, and Mertesacker in 2014.

Chelsea then takes second place, having had four players win the World Cup since 1994. Frank Leboeuf won with France in 1998, André Schürrle achieved victory with Germany in 2014, and Kanté and Giroud then won with Les Bleus in 2018.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham are then tied on two winners, with Aston Villa, Brighton, and West Ham having one in this period.

It must be remembered, though, that Premier League sides have achieved this total without England winning the tournament – meaning the list is entirely exempt of home-grown players.

La Liga – 44 winners

Now that we’ve covered the Premier League, the division with the most World Cup winners in the last 32 years is a tie with La Liga being one of the two. Since 1994, the Spanish first division has managed to provide 44 winners across all teams.

Leading this total is Barcelona, with the club having 11 World Cup winning players. Unsurprisingly the majority of them (seven) came in 2010 when Spain lifted the trophy, with the rest coming in the 1994 (one), 2002 (one), and 2018 (two) tournaments.

Closely following Barça is the other giant of Spanish football, Real Madrid, with nine World Cup winners. Again, most of these came in Spain’s 2010 victory (five), but Madrid have shown a greater longevity of having tournament champions in their team than their rivals. Los Blancos have managed to contain winners in their squad across five different World Cup years compared to Barça’s four.

The remaining La Liga teams with World Cup winners are Atlético Madrid (five), Sevilla (five), Valencia (four), Real Betis (three), Villarreal (three), Athletic Bilbao (two), and Deportivo La Coruña (two).

Contrastingly to Premier League sides, clubs from La Liga have been able to have home-grown players win the World Cup. This also makes up almost half of their tally (20) and boosts the number of winners they’ve had.

Serie A – 44 winners

Joint-top with La Liga, the Italian top division, Serie A, has also boasted 44 World Cup winning players since the 1994 campaign.

Providing the highest number of tournament winners is Juventus – who also top the all-time rankings for clubs. The last 32 years have seen them manage ten World Cup winning players in their team, with half coming after Italy’s win in 2006.

The other two main supporters of Serie A’s total are AC Milan and Roma, who each have seven players that’ve won the competition. As is the case with the all-time list, Roma have also had players win the World Cup across the most tournaments too (five)!

Despite placing third in the overall rankings, Inter Milan haven’t been as successful with their players at the World Cup in more recent times. They’ve only had four winners in the last 32 years, with one player coming in each of the 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2022 tournaments.

Looking at the nationality of every World Cup winner from Serie A since 1994, 23 of them played for Italy and won in the 2006 campaign. This means that every player for Italy during that tournament played in the Serie A! Though struggling at the World Cup since, it really demonstrates the strength of the league and its home-grown talents during the 2000s.

Bundesliga – 24 winners

With three more World Cup winners than England since 1994, the Bundesliga has had more recent success in producing champions for the global stage. As Germany’s top division has had 24 players win the tournament in this time, it places the league in joint second place.

Considering Bayern Munich have provided the second-most World Cup winners in history, it’s no shock that they’ve also had the most in the last 32 years. Since 1994, Bayern have had ten players go on to win the competition, with seven in 2014.

Looking across other teams in the Bundesliga, the ones that give Bayern’s total the most support are Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen. The two teams have four and three winners respectively, with Dortmund’s four coming in the 2014 campaign. Leverkusen’s, however, have been split across three World Cups, occurring in 1994, 2002, and 2022.

Other Bundesliga sides that’ve had tournament winning players include Schalke 04 (two), VfB Stuttgart (two), Borussia Mönchengladbach (one), Hannover 96 (one) and SC Freiburg (one).

Looking at every team’s winners, there’s a clear pattern of favouring German footballers, with most of the Bundesliga’s World Cup winning players in the last three decades being home-grown. However, both Leverkusen and Stuttgart have only had overseas winners since 1994, so there’s also been an influx of foreign talents in the league as well – shown by eight non-domestic players winning across all teams.

Ligue 1 – 24 winners

Then the final of the top five leagues, Ligue 1, just manages to beat the Premier League’s total, with three more players winning the World Cup in the previous 32 years.

PSG, Marseille, and Monaco are some of France’s biggest teams, and the numbers seem to show this too. They’re the sides with the most World Cup winners in Ligue 1, with PSG totalling six, and Marseille and Monaco both having five. Auxerre and Lyon come close, with three, and are followed by Metz and Bordeaux who’ve one winner each.

Like most of the other top European leagues, the majority of the Ligue 1 World Cup winning players in recent years have been home-grown (14). This is obviously helped by France winning the tournament twice since 1994 but still shows the league produces a steady number of successful French talents.
