Which Asian teams are the best in World Cup history? Discover the Asian nations that performed the best and which have appeared at the tournament the most.

Though the continent is yet to have a winner of the World Cup, Asia has managed to produce some highly competitive teams at the tournament. From impressive runs at the tournament to standout results against better ranked nations, the Asian nations at the World Cup have helped to create some historical and pivotal moments.

But, if we were to rank every Asian team to have competed at the tournament, which would come out on top?

Looking through all the nations from Asia, we’ve looked at the teams that have played at the World Cup the most, the ones with the most special moments, and which have reached the furthest stage of the tournament. Read on to learn which Asian teams are the best in World Cup history!

Which Asian nations have played at the most World Cups?

Firstly, we’ll run through the appearances that each Asian team has made prior to the 2026 World Cup. Looking at the overall picture, some nations clearly stand out from the majority.

Topping this statistic is South Korea, who’ve made 11 appearances at the World Cup since 1954. Following them up in second is Japan after they’ve featured seven times, with a few teams then tied for third place.

All three of Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Iran, have made six appearances at the tournament! This is proceeded by North Korea, who are the lone nation on two.

Finally, Qatar, Iraq, China, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Israel, and Indonesia are all on one appearance.

Ranking Asian nations at the World Cup

Below, we’ll show the rankings of Asian nations at the World Cup, including highlights of what each team has achieved throughout their time spent at the tournament. Looking at various factors such as performance, the number of appearances made, consistency, and their best players, here are our rankings.

1. South Korea

Much like with the appearances, South Korea again comes on top. Combining multiple factors together such as appearances, performances, and runs at the tournament, they certainly have earned this spot.

As previously mentioned, their 11 appearances mean that they have the most by four, making them comfortably first in this aspect. They have also managed to consistently qualify for the tournament since 1986, putting together a run of ten in a row. Their only other qualification was a standalone one in 1954, being the very first time they featured.

Regarding their performances, South Korea have also managed to make it incredibly far into tournaments too, getting as far as the semi-final in 2002 where they finished in fourth place. This notable run is the furthest that any Asian team has had and occurred when they co-hosted the World Cup with Japan. The element of playing on home soil certainly seemed to have an impact, as they managed to beat giants like Portugal 1-0, Italy 2-1, and Spain on penalties along the way. Their only defeat was a narrow one against Germany, where they lost 1-0 after a Michael Ballack goal in the 75th minute.

Heavily featuring in their 2002 campaign, Park Ji-sung was instrumental in their successes. Not only did he score a decisive goal against Portugal to send them into the quarter-finals, but he was also a symbol for the nation, providing intense pressing attributes and stamina to South Korea’s team.

As a more modern talisman, however, Son Heung-min has been the central figure in recent years, playing a big part in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. In the game against Germany in 2018, Son managed to score the second goal in a 2-0 win and sealing victory for them in the group stage. He’s widely considered to be one of the most talented players that the country has ever produced, with him also contributing to their 2022 campaign when they reached the round of 16.

So, with a mixture of consistent qualification, impressive World Cup runs, and elite talismanic players, South Korea come in first place.

2. Japan

Much like with the appearances list for Asian nations, Japan are also in second place here as well. After featuring at the World Cup seven times, they just have enough to be outright second place in this statistic.

Of all the occasions that they’ve featured at the World Cup, Japan’s best-ever finish has been the round of 16. Despite not being very deep into the tournament, they have managed this achievement on four separate occasions, most recently in 2022. This particular campaign featured some special wins over Germany and Spain, beating the former 2-0 and the latter 2-1.

They’ve managed to have multiple standout players playing in various iterations of their national team, but Hidetoshi Nakata is definitely one of the more revered ones. He’s arguably the first superstar Japan had at the World Cup, with the midfielder playing between 1998 and 2006. His contributions to the team helped to establish them as a more serious footballing nation on the World Stage.

Featuring between 2010 and 2018, Keisuke Honda is a record holding member of the Japanese national team. Honda is Japan’s World Cup top goal scorer, having netted four times across all appearances and scoring in each tournament he played in. The most important of these arguably came against Cameroon in the first group game of 2010, where he scored the one and only goal to win the match.

Unfortunately for Japan, their inability to push past the round of 16 is the only limiting factor in their case for first place. But, with regular qualification since 1998, some iconic players, and big wins over top footballing nations, they’re certainly worthy of second place on this list.

3. Saudi Arabia

The third spot in these rankings then goes to Saudi Arabia, who are tied for the number of appearances they’ve had at the World Cup with both Australia and Iran. Out of the six times they’ve featured at the tournament, the longest run of consecutive qualifications that Saudi Arabia have managed to string together is four, occurring between 1994 and 2006.

Their debut in the 1994 campaign was by far their most impressive tournament as they achieved their best finish after reaching the round of 16. This came after wins over Morocco (2-1) and Belgium (1-0), with their six points managing to be enough to take them through.

Their best result, however, came in the 2022 World Cup, where they shocked fans around the globe after beating the eventual champions Argentina 2-1 in the group stages. This came as a result of an equaliser from Al-Shehri and a stunning winner from Salem Al-Dawsari in the 53rd minute.

Arguably the best Saudi Arabian player to have featured at the World Cup is Sami Al Jaber. The striker is the joint-top goal scorer with Al Dawsari with three goals, having found the net in the 1994, 1998, and 2006 tournaments. This made him the first player from the nation to have scored in three separate editions of the World Cup.

Saeed Al Owairan is another one of the best remembered players to have played for the Saudi Arabia at the tournament, scoring a legendary solo goal against Belgium in the 1994 World Cup. Receiving the ball deep inside his own half, he drove up the pitch, beat three players, and slotted the ball past an onrushing Michel Preud`homme in the Belgian goal. Though the goal came in the sixth minute, it turned out to be decisive as Saudi Arabia won the game 1-0.

Considering that Saudi Arabia have some memorable players, moments, and are one of the more regular Asian World Cup qualifiers, third place is a fitting place for them to rank.

4. Australia

Next up, and in fourth place, is Australia who are another team to have featured at the World Cup six times. This makes them one of the more common Asian nations to see playing at the tournament, despite them being a part of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) for their 1974 debut. Since 2006, however, they’ve been a part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Impressively, Australia are currently on their best run of successive qualifications after putting together a run of six following them successfully making it to the 2026 tournament. Looking into all their campaigns, though, their best finish has been the round of 16. They’ve managed to make it to this stage in both the 2006 and 2022 tournaments, managing some respectable results in their run-ins.

Though the 2006 World Cup included an impressive 3-1 win over Japan, their 2022 tournament was statistically more impressive as the accumulated more points in the group stage. In their 2006 campaign they only managed to get four points, compared to the six they achieved in 2022 after 1-0 wins over Tunisia and Denmark. They also exited the tournament in respectable fashion after losing 2-1 to the eventual champions, Argentina, in the round of 16.

The top goal scorer at the World Cup for the Socceroos is Tim Cahill, with the Australian attacking midfielder managing to find the net an impressive five times. Cahill scored in three consecutive tournaments, with goals in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 campaigns. His first goals came against Japan in 2006, with a late Brace being crucial in their 3-1 win vital to them advancing past the group stage for the first time in their history.

Another important player for Australia at the World Cup has been Harry Kewel, who’s important late equaliser against Croatia at the 2006 tournament helped to send them through to the round of 16 for the first time. Without his dramatic goal, Croatia would’ve qualified ahead of Australia, but this moment gave them a much-needed result.

With a mixture of some memorable players, special late goals, and regular qualification since 2006, it places Australia into fourth place in our rankings. As they failed to get further than the round of 16, they can’t quite justify a higher position.

5. Iran

Rounding out the top five Asian nations to have competed at the World Cup is Iran, who are the last team from the continent to have made six appearances. Having made it to the 2026 World Cup Iran have just managed to put together a run of four consecutive qualifications.

Despite being one of the Asian nations that have qualified the most, however, Iran are yet to get past the group stage. Their best campaign out of all their World Cup appearances is no doubt the 2018 tournament as they only missed out on the round of 16 by a point. This was made all the more impressive due to their group including Spain, Euros holders Portugal, and Morocco.

Each game in this tournament was a close one, with a narrow 1-0 win over Morocco in the opening game, a 1-0 loss to Spain five days later, and a 1-1 draw against Portugal in the final game of the group.

Medhi Taremi is somewhat of a modern hero for Iran considering that he’s their top goalscorer, and a talismanic striker. Despite only scoring twice, he’s the only Iranian player to have found the net on more than one occasion, with both of his goals coming against England in a heavy 6-2 defeat.

As Iran are one of the more common qualifiers from Asia and have managed some respectable campaigns such as their one in 2018, they are deserving of a top five spot. They can’t rank any higher, however, because of their lack of progression beyond the group stage.

6. North Korea

Following up Iran is North Korea, who manage to place in sixth for these rankings. Though only appearing twice at the tournament to date after featuring in the 1966 and 2010 World Cups, North Korea have achieved one of the best campaigns from an Asian team.

The best of their two World Cup participations was undoubtedly in 1966 when they made it all the way to the quarter-finals. It was here where they beat drew 1-1 with Chile and beat Italy 1-0 to progress out the groups and into the next round. Though the following game began well after North Korea took a three-goal lead, Portugal went on a scoring spree and netted five by the 80th minute, sending the Asian outfit crashing out of the tournament.

Scoring one of North Korea’s most important goals, Pak Doo Ik has etched himself into the nation’s folklore. In their 1966 matchup against Italy, he managed to score a decisive goal in the 42nd minute, that took the nation above Italy in the group and qualified them for the next round.

Because of their limited qualifications and appearances, North Korea can’t push to feature any higher in our rankings. However, their impressive 1966 campaign is a huge factor in them pushing for a top five spot. Who knows where they could rank if they qualify a few more times?

7. Iraq

Placing seventh in these rankings is Iraq, who’ve only played in one World Cup to date. This will soon change, however, as they’ll be getting their second appearance after featuring at the 2026 tournament.

Their lone World Cup campaign so far was in the 1986 Mexican tournament, where they were unable to progress from the groups. After losing to Paraguay 1-0, Belgium 2-1, and Mexico 1-0, they finished bottom of the group on zero points.

As the only goalscorer for Iraq at the World Cup, Ahmed Rahi has made himself a key part of the nation’s history at the tournament. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, he took one touch before rifling it into the bottom left corner, beating Belgian shot stopper Jean-Marie Pfaff.

With only one World Cup to base their ranking on, Iraq just can’t be put any higher up on the list. However, with them only losing by one-goal margins for every game, they have done better than some of the nations that feature below.

8. Qatar

Coming in eighth place is Qatar, after they qualified for the 2022 World Cup due to being hosts that year. However, they’ve managed to make it to the 2026 edition, so may be able to improve their reputation in the upcoming tournament.

Their 2022 campaign saw them fail to progress from the groups after losing all three of their matches by a two-goal margin. They lost 2-0 to Ecuador, 3-1 to Senegal, and 2-0 to the Netherlands, meaning they ended up bottom of their group with zero points.

Mohammed Muntari still managed to make himself a historical figure for the nation, though, as he scored Qatar’s first-ever goal at the World Cup. In the 78th minute of their game against Senegal, Muntari demonstrated a real desire to meet the cross from Ismaeel Mohammad’s cross. This drive allowed him to head home, though the goal turned out to be nothing more than a consolation.

Again, considering that there’s only one campaign to base their ranking off in which they lost every game, they can’t place any higher up the list.

9. Israel

Completing the list and finishing in twelfth is Israel, who have also only featured at the World Cup on one occasion. This occurred at the 1970 Mexican World Cup, where they were in a group with Italy, Uruguay, and Sweden.

In this tough group, they still managed to earn two points after a 1-1 draw with Sweden and a 0-0 draw against Italy. Their 2-0 loss in the opening game, however, proved to not be good enough, as they missed out on qualifying for the next round by a point.

As their only goal scorer at the World Cup, Mordechai Spiegler has made himself a memorable figure in Israeli football history. Finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute of the game against Sweden, Spiegler levelled the game and earned his team their first-ever point at the tournament.

Though not progressing out of the groups, Israel still managed to get on the scoresheet, earn points, and even keep a clean sheet against a top nation. So, despite their one appearance, they still put together a respectable campaign, allowing them to finish in ninth place.

10. Kuwait

Completing the top ten Asian teams is Kuwait, with their single World Cup appearance not showing enough promise to position them any higher on this list. The tournament they played in was Spain 1982, where they had a tough group including England, France, and Czechoslovakia.

Due to the strength of their group stage opponents, Kuwait were only able to get a point. They managed this in their first game of the tournament against Czechoslovakia, achieving a 1-1 draw. Despite a decent start, they still faced a 4-1 loss against France and a narrow 1-0 defeat against England, leaving them bottom of the group.

Faisal Al Dakhil became the nations first-ever World Cup goalscorer, grabbing an equaliser against Czechoslovakia. His important goal managed to get Kuwait their only point at the tournament, making it a landmark moment in the country’s history.

Considering the fact that Kuwait managed to achieve a point in a difficult group and scored in multiple matches, they manage to feature here.

11. China

Finishing just outside the top ten for these rankings is China, who are to have only played at one World Cup. This was at the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea, where they were in a group with eventual champions Brazil, Turkey, and Costa Rica.

This group proved to be too big of a challenge as they faced defeat in every game, failing to score a goal in the process. They lost 2-0 to Costa Rica, 4-0 to Brazil, and then 3-0 to Turkey.

Without any goals, there aren’t any players that inherently stand out compared of any of the others. However, defender Fan Zhiyi captained his nation at the tournament and played every minute of their campaign. This feat helped to solidify himself as a forever remembered figure in China’s World Cup history as he concluded his international career following the tournament.

As there’s little to go off without any wins, draws, or goals, China are restricted to ninth when looking at their current achievements.

12. United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Twelfth place in these rankings is the UAE who also only have one appearance at the tournament. Playing at the 1990 Italian World Cup, the UAE were placed into a group with West Germany, Yugoslavia, and Colombia, which turned out to be too great of a challenge.

Their campaign began with a 2-0 loss to Colombia and things just went downhill from there. They followed this up with a heavy 5-1 defeat to West Germany, and a 4-1 loss to Yugoslavia, which solidified their place at the bottom of the group.

As the scorer of their first World Cup goal, Ismail Mubarak is one of the most important players in the UAE’s history at the tournament. Capitalising on a defensive error by West Germany at the start of the second half, he managed to bring the scoreline to 2-1. Though this appeared like a huge moment in the game at the time, they conceded a further three goals to out the game beyond doubt.

Despite getting on the scoresheet unlike other nations featuring on this list, they conceded more than four goals in two of their games. With heavy defeats like these, it places them below China and second-last of the rankings.

13. Indonesia

The final team in our Asian World Cup rankings is Indonesia, though they were known as the Dutch East Indies in their only appearance at the tournament. Though they’ve only appeared once, it was a landmark appearance as they became the first Asian team to play at the World Cup.

Unfortunately for them, their performances weren’t as impressive as the achievement of reaching the finals. Due to the format, they only played one game against Hungary which they ended up losing 6-0.

With their time at the World Cup being so short and considering they got heavily beaten, Indonesia finish as the bottom ranked Asian nation at the competition. Though, the fact they were the first Asian side to compete still gives them a huge historic significance within the continent.
