Wondering which big teams are missing from the 2026 World Cup? We identify the best countries not to make it, both this year and in previous editions.

With the World Cup seeing a recent expansion to 48 teams – up from the 32 we’ve been used to over the last 30 years – many nations who might have previously missed out on the glory of a finals appearance have earned an appearance among the world’s best this summer.

But that’s not to say there aren’t still some shock omissions from the bracket, with top nations from Europe, Africa, and the Americas failing to qualify. Here, we’ve identified the big teams missing from the World Cup, as well digging into some of the biggest surprise non-qualifiers over the years.

Of course, the absence of some of the more noteworthy teams might make some of the matchups a little more interesting – so if you’re ready to back your favourite, why not explore the latest World Cup betting odds for all the games as they unfold?

The ‘best’ nations missing from the World Cup in 2026

With Italy missing their third World Cup in a row, following a heartbreaking loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in UEFA’s playoff process, they’re by far the biggest team missing from the 2026 World Cup – currently ranked number 12 on FIFA’s ranking. With their last appearance occurring way back in 2014, there are a whole generation of Azzurri fans who’ve never seen their nation on the biggest stage.

Meanwhile, there are 10 other eligible countries who fall into FIFA’s top 48, but failed to make it to the World Cup: Denmark, ranked 20th, like Italy, came close but fell at the playoff stage, while Nigeria (26th) underperformed in African qualifying – placing second in their qualification group to South Africa and losing to Congo DR in the playoffs; a playoff fate also held by Cameroon (45th).

Like Italy and Denmark, Ukraine (32nd) and Poland (35th) fell at the playoff phase, both succumbing to Sweden in the semi-final and final respectively; while Wales (37th) suffered playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina – who eventually went on to progress at the expense of Italy.

Finally, Serbia (39th), Hungary (42nd), and Greece (47th) can feel a little less hard done by, having failed to advance past the first-round group stage altogether.

The biggest teams not to qualify for previous World Cups

So, there are the biggest nations missing from this year’s World Cup; but what about previous iterations of the tournament? We know Italy are the big-name omission from the previous two, but who else failed to make it to the competition? Let’s find out…

2022

Off the back of Euro 2020 success, Italy were the shock absentee from the World Cup in 2022. Following a qualification campaign that saw them finish second best to Switzerland, Italy were forced to contend with the playoff process.

However, despite facing a North Macedonia side placed more than 60 positions deeper in the FIFA rankings, they failed to convert any of their 32 attempts and eventually succumbed to a 90+2 minute goal in front of a disappointed Palermo crowd.

Other notable no-shows include Colombia, who rued a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Ecuador in qualifying, which ultimately cost them a place in the top four of Conmebol qualifying (Ecuador placed 3 points ahead, with a hefty goal difference heavily helped by the rout).

2018

After 60 straight years of World Cup qualification, Italy missed out on the finals just 12 years after they won their fourth title. They couldn’t manage automatic progression and failed to beat (or even register a goal against) Sweden over two legs, with the Azzurri left disappointed.

Elsewhere in Europe, the Netherlands missed the cut for the first time since 1986 – especially surprising since they were finalists in 2010 and semi-finalists in 2014 – and Wales failed to qualify from a potentially winnable group.

However, perhaps the biggest shock wasn’t a missing UEFA nation; placing 9th in the world, Chileans hoped for a straightforward qualifying route. But it was anything but. Instead, they placed outside the top five (top four qualify automatically, and fifth goes through to the Inter-confederation playoff), just two points off Argentina in 3rd. A final day 3-0 defeat to Brazil sealed their fate.

2014

There weren’t too many shock countries missing from the World Cup in 2014, but many would have expected the likes of Ukraine and Denmark to perhaps do better in qualifying – the former being the highest ranked team not to progress to the finals.

Unfortunately for the Ukrainians, they lined up against France in the playoff round. Incidentally, France went 2-0 in the first leg – had they not pulled it back to win 3-2 on aggregate, they’d be on this list themselves!

2010

Placing 10th to 12th in the FIFA world rankings ahead of the tournament, respectively, Croatia, Russia, and Egypt were the shock casualties of qualifying in 2010. Croatia finished just a single point off the playoff places, behind Ukraine – who they failed to beat home or away – while suffered heartbreak at the hand of the away goals rule vs Slovenia in the runners-up round.

Speaking of ‘hands’, while not necessarily a shock absence from the World Cup, Ireland felt seriously hard done by after losing their own playoff game vs France, in a game marred by controversy as Les Bleus fumbled their way to victory by way of a Thierry Henry handball in the build up to William Gallas’ extra time winner!

As for Egypt, they experienced their own version of agony. After finishing on identical points, goal difference, and head-to-head records as Algeria, a tiebreaking playoff was called to put one through and send one packing. Unfortunately, the Pharaohs ended up on the wrong side of a 1-0 defeat.
