MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls vs. Real Salt Lake

Expect lots of goalmouth action between two sides desperate for points

New York Red Bulls host Real Salt Lake in an important midweek clash for both sides on Wednesday night, in a game that should deliver on the goal front.

The Red Bulls slipped to their fourth straight MLS defeat against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. They lost the game 2-1 but English striker Bradley Wright-Phillips missed two penalties on the night to sum up everything that’s going wrong for the club at the moment.

Lloyd Sam’s fitness is still questionable as he sat out at the weekend, while Sacha Kljestan was sent off early in the game and so he won’t be available for Wednesday’s match in what is another blow for Jesse Marsch to deal with.

New York have now conceded ten goals in their last four games and have won just once in their last nine. A great start to the season has faded dramatically and they need to get back on track quickly to avoid falling further away from the playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Wednesday’s opponents Real Salt Lake are still trying to get into the playoff positions in the West, and despite being four points better off than the Red Bulls, they currently sit in eighth in a very tight looking Western Conference.

Jeff Cassar’s side snapped a three-game winless run with a dramatic late 2-1 victory against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night and will take confidence to Red Bull Arena as a result.

It would certainly appear easier to side with RSL ahead of this one but it’s worth noting that the Red Bulls haven’t lost five straight regular season games since the 2009 season.

Real Salt Lake have lost their last three on the road and so it’s probably best to look at the goals market.

There have been over 2.5 goals in four of RSL’s last five away games, while there have been over 2.5 in the Red Bulls’ last three games. So backing over 2.5 goals at 9/10 looks a solid bet.

The Red Bulls have only scored the first goal in one of their last five home games, while they have been losing at halftime in their last three. Backing Real Salt Lake to be winning at the break and the match to end as a draw looks great value at 16/1.

There were seven goals the last time these two met at Red Bull Arena as New York managed to win 4-3 in a match that saw three penalties converted back in 2013.

It may be too close to call a result but goals are to sure to be on the cards on Wednesday night, and a few of them.

Recommended bets:

Over 2.5 goals @ 9/10

Real Salt Lake to be leading at halftime and the match to end a draw @ 16/1

Both teams to score and the match to end a draw @ 4/1
