D.C. United vs. Chicago Fire: League leaders to come out on top but it will not be straight forward

DCU not at their best but should still put out the Fire

D.C. United may be leading both the Eastern Conference and the overall MLS table at the moment but they are not a totally dominant force and will be pushed hard by Chicago Fire this Wednesday.

DCU are known for being a well-oiled machine, although with no real stars to speak of. They churn out results, which is why they sit top of the Eastern Conference, but they have only won by more than one goal once this campaign.

This is illustrative of how they lack the ability to truly kill off teams but still manage to pick up plenty of points.

Whilst their league position is impressive, the Black and Reds’ form is not great; they have just one win in their last four, scoring just three goals. They have also managed just one clean sheet in their last 10 outings.

The Fire have similarly tended to be in tight matches this year, but are too regularly on the wrong end of the result, which is why they are down in sixth.

They did, however, buck that trend last time out with a thumping 3-0 triumph over Montreal Impact.

Chicago, most notably, have the creative powers of Scotland man Shaun Maloney. Although his impact has been a little underwhelming with just one goal and two assists this season.

DC United are, understandably, favourites for this one but their dodgy form has to be considered, as does their injury list.

The likes of Eddie Johnson, Fabian Espindola and Luis Silva are just some of the men sidelined currently. In contrast, the Fire are only missing Patrick Nyarko.

If this contest was held at Toyota Park then there would be enough to suggest the Fire could pick up a result, but being at RFK Stadium, we still have to plump with DCU.

Ben Olsen’s men have not lost on their own patch this season, winning six and drawing three in all competitions.

It will certainly be tight, though, and D.C. United winning with both teams to score looks a really good punt at 16/5.

D.C. United to win & both teams to score @ 16/5.
