Champions League ACCA: Back the big teams

Five experienced European outfits are close to the group stages and offer sizzling profits in the play-off second legs

17/20 – Manchester United to beat Club Brugge

Three-time European champions Manchester United travel to Belgium having won 3-1 against Club Brugge at Old Trafford.

Louis Van Gaal’s men remain unbeaten this season and are playing with impressive control and organisation.

If Memphis Depay and Wayne Rooney link up as well as they did in the first leg, then a repeat outcome is likely to occur.

4/7 – Bayer Leverkusen to beat Lazio

Lazio haven’t played in the Champions League since 2007 and this lack of matches at the elite level of European football may be decisive against Bayer Leverkusen.

The German side, who finshed fourth in the Bundesliga last season, are ruthless at home, bagging 39 goals at the BayArena last campaign.

Despite losing the first leg 1-0, Leverkusen dominated throughout and are capable of putting on a show in front of their fans against a defensive-minded Lazio outfit.

10/11 – APOEL Nicosia to beat FC Astana

Despite trailing the tie 1-0, APOEL Nicosia’s consistency in Europe over the years will give them confidence to overcome little-known FC Astana.

Nicosia have reached at least the group stages in Europe in three of the last four years.

While being without a win in five European games at home, APOEL have pushed the likes of Barcelona, PSG, and Atletico Madrid in the past and will expect to progress to the group stages again.

23/20 – CSKA Moscow to beat Sporting Lisbon

Despite succumbing to a disappointing 2-1 defeat in Portugal, CSKA have enjoyed an excellent start to the year, winning all six league games and scoring 10 goals in the process.

Last season, the Russian outfit collected more than 60 per cent of their points at the Arena Khimki, routing teams by three, four, five and six goals on numerous occasions.

A similar score-line could be on the cards as Sporting are vulnerable on the road, losing 21 per cent of last season’s away fixtures by more than two goals.

11/10 – Partizan Belgrade to beat BATE Borisov

BATE Borisov’s 1-0 first-leg victory over Partizan Belgrade was a surprise, but a repeat result in Serbia looks unlikely.

Having previously been the whipping boys of Champions League football, Borisov haven’t reached the group stages in three years.

Partizan, however, have showed steady progress in recent campaigns – winning last season’s league title – and this positive momentum should see them through against Borisov.
