Discover all things Spain at the World Cup, including iconic memories from years gone by, their top performers, and how to bet on La Roja this time around.

For a country that has produced so many all-time greats, Spain’s World Cup record is arguably underwhelming! It took until 2010 for the Spaniards to be crowned world champions and La Roja haven’t won a knockout match since then.

Since 1950, Spain have made only one World Cup semi-final appearance, which of course came when they won the tournament in 2010.

What is Spain’s World Cup record?

The 2026 World Cup represents the 17th time Spain have qualified for the World Cup. You have to go all the way back to 1974 for the last time they didn’t qualify for the World Cup, though they have notably failed to win a knockout match in four of the last five tournaments.

Across 67 World Cup matches, La Roja have 31 wins, 17 draws, and 19 defeats. Their overall goal difference is +33, with 108 goals scored and 75 conceded.

Spain have only reached the semi-finals on two occasions. The first of which ended in a fourth place finish in 1950. Their next trip to the last four saw them crowned champions in 2010.

How many times has Spain won the World Cup?

Spain have only won the World Cup once. This win came in 2010. It was a period of unparalleled Spanish dominance across football, with Euros wins in 2008 and 2012, and Barcelona dominating club football.

The national team closely followed the blueprint set out by Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, with vast amounts of possession and an orchestrated press when they lost the ball.

A recap of Spain’s 2010 World Cup win

After a loss to Switzerland in their opening group match, Spain defeated Honduras and Chile to progress to the knockout rounds. A run of three consecutive 1-0 wins set up a final with the Netherlands.

The Dutch saw physicality as their best chance of stopping a magnificent Spanish team. Fourteen yellow cards were shown – more than doubling the previous high for a World Cup final – and Johnny Heitinga was sent off for receiving two yellow cards. Nigel de Jong somehow got away with a kung-fu kick on Xabi Alonso, which is the image most commonly associated with this final.

In between the combative play, both teams had chances as Spain unsurprisingly dominated possession. The game went to extra time when it was goalless after 90 minutes, however, with a strike from Andres Iniesta ultimately securing Spain’s first World Cup win.

What is Spain’s record against their group stage opponents?

Uruguay are Spain’s strongest group stage opponent at the 2026 World Cup. While the South Americans have a proud history in the World Cup, they have notably never beaten Spain.

La Roja have won five and drawn five against Uruguay. Their last meeting was a 2-1 Spain win in the 2013 Confederations Cup.

Spain have won all three of their matches against Saudi Arabia, the most recent of which was a 5-0 win in 2012. The Green Falcons did record an upset at the 2022 tournament, however, defeating Argentina in the group stage.

The World Cup will be the first time Spain have faced Cape Verde. The Blue Sharks are playing in their first World Cup.

Iconic Spanish World Cup memories

Inevitably, many of Spain’s fondest World Cup memories are tied to their triumph in 2010. There are plenty of other happy memories down the years, however, including a historic goal-scoring performance in 1986.

Butragueño Scores Four

In 1986, Spain hadn’t reached the knockout rounds since 1950. Thanks to Emilio Butragueño’s four goals, any nerves when they faced Denmark  in the last 16 were put to bed.

At the time, no one had scored more than four goals in a World Cup match. To this day, Butragueño is one of seven players to have scored four or more goals in a World Cup outing.

Seventh Heaven Against Costa Rica

Spain were favoured over Costa Rica when they met in the 2022 group stage, but no one expected a 7-0 hammering. Only six World Cup matches have seen a bigger winning margin.

After falling to Russia in the round of 16 four years prior, it was a real statement from La Roja, with a number of young players starring. Six different players found the net, including Gavi and Dani Olmo.

Iniesta’s World Champion Volley

Deep into extra time of a tense, bad-tempered 2010 World Cup final, Spain had the ball in the Netherlands’ third. A speculative pass from Fernando Torres bounced to Cesc Fabregas on the edge of the area, who popped the ball forward to Andres Iniesta.

In line with the right-hand post and just inside the area, Iniesta took a perfect touch, giving himself some space, and setting the ball up to be hit on the way down after a bounce. He drilled the ball into the far corner, sparking magical celebrations as Spain became World Cup winners.

As Iniesta celebrated, he whipped off his shirt to reveal a tribute to Dani Jarque, a former teammate who had passed away in 2009. The image of Iniesta in his white vest with his arms held out on each side is one of the most iconic in World Cup history.

Casillas’ Shootout Heroics

Entering the 2002 World Cup, Iker Casillas was expected to be the backup to Santiago Canizares. That’s not how it played out – Casillas was suddenly Spain’s first choice when Canizares suffered a freak injury before the tournament.

Aged just 21, Casillas saved a penalty from Ian Harte in normal time before adding two more penalty saves from Kevin Kilbane and David Connolly in the shootout.

Villa Carries Spanish Hopes

After the shock of an opening match defeat to Switzerland, David Villa put Spain on his back. Scoring the only two goals as Spain beat Honduras, Villa began a run of four straight matches on the scoresheet.

He scored in a pivotal 2-1 win over Chile and scored the only goal of the game in wins over Portugal and Paraguay in the knockout phase.

Spain’s biggest World Cup wins

Spain’s biggest World Cup win was the 7-0 hammering of Costa Rica in the 2022 group stage. It was a sign of things to come from a young team, who went on to win Euro 2024 two years later.

Prior to that victory, La Roja’s largest margin of victory was five goals in a 6-1 win over Bulgaria in 1998. Fernando Morientes contributed a brace, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a group stage exit.

There was a 5-1 win over Denmark in the last 16 in 1986, which featured four goals from Emilio Butragueño. They also won 4-0 against Ukraine in 2006 with Xabi Alonso, David Villa, and Fernando Torres getting on the scoresheet.

Spain’s biggest World Cup defeats

Heavy World Cup defeats have been relatively rare for Spain. They have had two particularly emphatic defeats, losing 6-1 to Brazil in 1950 and 5-1 to the Netherlands in 2014.

The 1950 edition of Brazil were absolutely dominant, with emphatic wins over Mexico and Sweden as well as their drubbing of Spain. The defeat at the hands of the Netherlands was more painful – Spain were defending champions and entered the tournament as one of the favourites.

After a first-half penalty from Xabi Alonso, it was one-way traffic, with braces for Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie.

Who has made the most World Cup appearances for Spain?

Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos are tied for the most World Cup appearances for Spain with 17 apiece. Both players were a part of the victorious team at the 2010 World Cup.

Of the 14 players with 12 or more World Cup appearances for Spain, 10 were in the squad that won La Roja’s only World Cup.
