Discover the history of Senegal at the World Cup. Learn about their record at the tournament, biggest wins, most capped players, top scorers and much more!

Despite not featuring as many times at the World Cup as other African nations, Senegal have been one of the successful teams from the continent in World Cup history. Throughout their time in the competition, the ‘Lions of Teranga’ have achieved some special results and had some impressive campaigns.

But what does the history of Senegal at the World Cup reveal? Below, we cover Senegal’s record at the competition, including their best memories, biggest wins, losses, and who their top scorers and appearance makers are.

How many times have Senegal qualified for the World Cup?

Including the 2026 World Cup, Senegal have qualified for the tournament on four occasions. They’re currently on their longest streak, having qualified for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments too.

What is Senegal’s World Cup record?

Senegal’s record across the four tournaments they’ve played in is respectable: after 12 games played, they have five wins, three draws, and four losses, giving them a 41.7% win rate.

In terms of where they’ve placed in each tournament, they’re yet to progress any further than the quarter-finals:

  • 2002: Quarter-finals (7th)

  • 2018: Group Stage (17th)

  • 2022: Round of 16 (10th)

Though, of course, they’ll be hoping to compete deep into this year’s edition, and they currently have World Cup winner odds of 80/1, making them the second-favourite among African nations . Finally, during their time at the World Cup they’ve scored a total of 16 goals and conceded 17, giving them a goal difference of -1.

What is Senegal’s record against their group stage opponents?

The 2026 World Cup group stage has put Senegal up against France, Norway, and Iraq. So, to see how they might perform against their future opponents, let’s first-take a look into the past to see how they’ve fared historically.

France

The only previous non-amateur match between Senegal and France actually occurred in the 2002 World Cup. Being the opening game of the Lions of Teranga’s debut tournament, it was expected that reigning champions, France, would win this comfortably. However, a goal from Papa Bouba Diop sealed a 1-0 win for Senegal in a hard-fought battle. We might be in for another surprise this time around!

Norway

Senegal have only played Norway once before, with the previous match-up coming in the form of a 2006 friendly. The game ended 2-1 to Senegal, with first-half goals from Moussa Ndiaye and Babacar M’baye Gueye being enough to see them come out on top. Norway’s Erik Hagen pulled one back before half-time, but Senegal saw out the win.

Iraq

Senegal have never played against Iraq before in a football match, meaning that we’ll have to defer to the FIFA rankings instead to see how this game might play out. With Iraq ranked in 57th and Senegal ranked in 17th, you would imagine that the African outfit will be favourites in the World Cup betting odds, with 40 positions separating them. Where do Senegal rank among African nations at the World Cup?

Compared to other African nations at the World Cup, Senegal are overall one of the better teams to have featured from the continent, despite not always being the highest for individual stats.

Senegal have made three appearances ahead of the 2026 tournament – the fifth-most, and tied with three other African nations. Currently, they sit five appearances behind Cameroon who have the most (8), but they will add a fourth appearance in the summer.

As they’ve managed to make it to the World Cup quarter-finals, Senegal are tied second for the furthest distance an African team has gone at the tournament. Morocco holds this record, having achieved a semi-final appearance in 2022, after which they lost to Croatia in the third-place playoff.

Finally, after reaching five wins Senegal are tied with three other African nations for the second-most victories. The only team that beats them is Nigeria, who have six wins after playing nine more games.

Senegal’s most iconic World Cup memories

Having not appeared at many World Cup tournaments in their history, Senegal haven’t had much time to create special and iconic memories. However, this doesn’t mean they don’t have any at all, and it just leaves room for historic moments this time around!

However, while we’re waiting for the 2026 competition to kick off, here are the nation’s very best moments at the tournament so far:

  • Defeating the reigning champions on their debut (2002): Being the first game of their debut tournament, not much was expected from Senegal. Considering that they were up against the most recent champions, France, most pundits and fans alike predicted this would be a routine win for Les Bleus. Despite the European outfit’s control of possession, Senegal’s relentless intensity caught them off guard, with Papa Bouba Diop firing the Lions of Teranga into the lead. Standing firm for the rest of the game, Senegal saw out the win and kept France at bay, achieving a result that sent shockwaves around the world and sent the defending champions’ campaign spiralling.

  • Defeating Sweden on golden goal (2002): Another memorable moment in their 2002 dream debut came in the round of 16. Sweden managed to take Senegal to extra time with the game finshing 1-1 after 90 minutes. A golden goal from Henri Camara in the 104th minute took Senegal into the quarter-finals, with another dramatic win.

  • Elimination by fair play rule (2018): At the 2018 World Cup, Senegal were knocked out of the tournament and became the first team to get eliminated by the fair play rule. The group ended with both Japan and Senegal being tied on points, goal difference, and goals scored, and the result between the sides was a 2-2 draw. This meant that every tie-breaker was even, so the fair play rule had to be applied as a rarely used last resort. With Senegal having two more yellow cards than Japan, they were eliminated instead of the Asian outfit, making history.

Celebrated Senegalese players who’ve played at the World Cup

Throughout all three tournaments that the Lions of Teranga have played at the World Cup, they’ve managed to have standout players featuring. Here are some of their most remembered and revered players to have played at the tournament:

  • Papa Bouba Diop: Senegal’s debut tournament in 2002 set the stage for Papa Bouba Diop to shine and write himself into Senegalese history. On the biggest stage against reigning champions France, Diop stepped up to the plate and delivered a goal that would mean he’s forever remembered by Senegal fans around the world. Helping his nation earn victory in their debut match at the World Cup, Diop elevated his status and became a cult hero.

  • Henri Camara: Another key player in Senegal’s 2002 run to the quarter-finals, Henri Camara also upped his game when his nation needed him. Round of 16 opponents Sweden proved a tough challenge, but Camara scored to level the game in the first half before then netting a golden goal in the 104th minute to win the match! Beating his man and rolling the ball into the bottom corner off the post, he propelled them into the next round. His efforts meant Senegal became the second-ever African team to make it to the quarter-finals stage and solidified him as a Senegalese fan favourite.

  • Sadio Mane: Despite Senegal being eliminated in the group stage in 2018, Sadio Mane’s performances meant that they only exited in the rare usage of the fair play rule. His goal against Japan secured a 2-2 draw and his all-round play contributed significantly to the team’s style. Mane is also something of a talisman for the nation due to his reputation at a club level, meaning that he played every minute at the tournament and captained the team for two of the three games. Mane unfortunately missed the 2022 tournament due to a leg injury sustained playing for Bayern Munich.
