England’s top assisters at the World Cup

So, with many big names included in England’s top assister list at the World Cup, let’s take a look at how they got there. Below, we delve into each player and talk through each tournament where they managed to add to their tally:

David Beckham – 6

Ranking in joint fourth place for the all-time World Cup assist list, David Beckham has been one of the most productive players in the tournament’s history. Playing in three World Cups between 1998 and 2006, Beckham has some spectacular assists to his name during this time.

Though not all his catalogue is memorable, some stand out from the rest – in particular, his line-breaking pass that found Michael Owen in the match against Argentina. It was here where his pass made the difference and unleashed Owen upon the Albiceleste’s defence, putting England in front.

His most prolific assisting campaign came in 2002, where he created three goals, compared to his one in 1998 and two in 2006.

Harry Kane – 3

Second place on England’s top assister list at the tournament is none other than Harry Kane. Though only providing half the amount that Beckham did, he’s been the next-most dependable provider. Impressively, Kane managed his entire tally in one campaign, getting all three in the 2022 group stages.

His first came against Iran in the form of a whipped cross from the right wing, with Raheem Sterling finishing off the chance. He managed a second later in the same game, taking the ball down and laying it off to Marcus Rashford, who slotted his shot past the keeper coolly. Finally, in the match against Wales, his low-driven cross across the face of goal was converted at the back post by Phil Foden.

Raheem Sterling – 2

Finishing in a tied third position for England’s all-time World Cup assisters is Raheem Sterling, who managed two across his three campaigns.

His first came in the Russian World Cup in 2018 against Panama, with Sterling laying the ball off to Lingard who emphatically curled his shot into the top right corner. Then his other came against Iran in the 2022 tournament, where he played a forward pass to Bukayo Saka who smashed it into the bottom left corner.

Tom Finney – 2

Joining him on two assists is Tom Finney, who played in all three tournaments between 1950 and 1958. Because of this, he’s the earliest recorded multiple-time assister in England’s World Cup history.

His first assist came in the 1950 edition, where he slipped the ball into the feet of Wilf Mannion who smashed it into the net. He then claimed his second during the 1954 competition, crossing the ball to Nat Lofthouse who finished off the chance.

Phil Foden – 2

A more recent addition to England’s top World Cup assister list is Phil Foden. Despite only playing in the 2022 tournament, he managed to set up a couple of goals throughout.

Grabbing both of his assists during the 3-0 win over Senegal, he was crucial to England’s success. Receiving the ball from Jude Bellingham, he made a pass with his first touch into the path of Harry Kane, who smashed the ball past Edouard Mendy in goal. Then his second was a well-delivered cross into Bukayo Saka’s feet, who dinked the ball over the keeper.

Paul Gascoigne – 2

Another player who only featured at one tournament was Paul Gascoigne, who also grabbed himself two assists. Featuring in the 1990 World Cup, the midfielder contributed two fantastic assists to help in a 1-0 over Egypt and for the 1-0 win against Belgium.

England’s group stage clash against Egypt was a close encounter, but Gascoigne’s floated free kick found the head of Mark Wright, who nudged it home. His second led to a late winner in the round of 16, as he again had a free kick that found an England shirt. This time, David Platt got on the end of the chance, volleying the ball into the net and winning the match.

Steve Hodge – 2

Appearing in both the 1986 and 1990 tournaments, Steve Hodge produced both of his assists in his first campaign.

It was against Poland where he first set up a goal, with his low cross finding Gary Lineker in the box and being tapped into the back of the net. The very next game against Paraguay, where he played a low pass across the face of goal and it was poked home by Lineker again.

Bobby Moore – 2

The legendary defender, Bobby Moore, was part of three tournaments for England – most notably the 1966 World Cup-winning campaign.

It was in England’s trophy-winning tournament that Moore managed both of his assists, with the two of them occurring in the final against West Germany. His first decisive contribution came in the form of a long floated free kick that found Geoff Hurst open in the box, with the striker’s glancing header finding the net to bring the scoreline to 1-1.

The second time he picked out the goalscorer came in extra time, with his lofted pass finding Hurst again before he smashed his shot into the top corner. This goal made it 4-2 and solidified England as World Champions.

Keith Newton – 2

Full-back Keith Newton managed both of his assists during the 1970 World Cup in the quarter-finals.

Despite losing the game 3-2, his assists were crucial in England competing in the match and giving West Germany a real challenge. His first ball forward found Alan Mullery, who got in front of his defender and scored at the near post. Later in the game, his floated cross found Martin Peters at the back post who smashed it into the net.

Tommy Taylor – 2

Playing his only World Cup in 1954, Tommy Taylor managed to supply his teammates with multiple chances, with two of them being converted.

At 22 years old, his first assist came in a 4-4 draw against Belgium, Taylor provided a through-pass to Ivor Broadis who scored a tap-in from seven yards out to make it 1-1.

His second assist of the tournament occurred against Switzerland in a 2-0 win. Flicking the ball over to Jimmy Mullen, the ball was tapped in, putting England 1-0 up.

Will any England players join the list at the 2026 World Cup?

So, now we know all the England players with more than one assist at the World Cup, let’s see which players may join or overtake them in 2026. The current England team has many creative talents throughout, each with the ability to pick out unique passes and make chances out of very little.

Jude Bellingham is one of the most likely candidates to add to his assist tally at the 2026 World Cup. Almost a guarantee to go to the tournament, Bellingham already has one assist to his name after setting up Jordan Henderson against Senegal in 2022. Should he add another to his total in the summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise given his ability to pick out a pass.

Depending on game time, newer additions to the England camp may be able to contribute at the tournament too. If the likes of up-and-coming stars Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson can show their playmaking capabilities at the World Cup, then who knows how many assists they’ll be able to provide?

Though already appearing on the list, Harry Kane has every chance of matching or even beating David Beckham’s total if he provides as many chances as he did in 2022. With him claiming his three assists in 2022, can he repeat the feat in 2026?

Can England go all the way?

Throughout their history at the tournament, England have had plenty of creative outlets. But can any of their current visionaries help fire the Three Lions to World Cup glory?

England are set to be one of the top contenders to become World Cup tournament winners and certainly have the players capable of completing the job. With Harry Kane chasing down Beckham’s assist record, he’ll surely have some added motivation to spearhead England’s charge for their first victory since 1966!
