Some of the most memorable and iconic high-scoring games don’t actually make it into the top ten, narrowly missing out despite containing eight goals!
This includes Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, and other matches such as the highest scoring draws at the tournament like England 4-4 Belgium (1954), and the Soviet Union 4-4 Colombia (1962).
The biggest World Cup scorelines of the 21st century
So far in this century, we’ve been lacking many real high-scoring thrillers at the World Cup, but it doesn’t mean we haven’t had any at all. Below, we can paint a picture of some of the highest scoring matches this millennium:
Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia (2002): The 2002 World Cup saw Germany batter Saudi Arabia 8-0 in the group stage, with Miroslav Klose running the show. The game saw him claim a hat-trick for himself, with Oliver Bierhof, Michael Ballack, and Carsten Jancker all grabbing goals for themselves too. This game proved to be a great spectacle and a real thrill for onlooking fans after Germany demonstrated an attacking masterclass.
Portugal 7-0 Korea Republic (2010): The 2010 World Cup treated us to a seven-goal thriller, with Portugal beating Korea Republic 7-0 in the group stage. Portugal had six different scorers in the game, with the goals being shared throughout the team. Portugal’s ruthlessness was evident, after Raul Meireles opened the scoring, Tiago Mendes found the back of the net twice, and Cristiano Ronaldo joined the action during the latter stages of the match too.
England 6-1 Panama (2018): England’s group game vs Panama in the 2018 World Cup is another that we can look back on too after it ended 6-1 to the Three Lions. Harry Kane stole the limelight after scoring a hat-trick, John Stones got two for himself, and Jesse Lingard whipped a shot from outside the box into the top right corner. Panama got a late set-piece goal as a consolation, but the damage had already been done by England.
The highest scoring World Cup finals
High-scoring games are exciting already, but when they’re in the final, they’re truly special to watch. The table below highlights the World Cup finals with the highest scorelines:
Rank | Game and scoreline | Year |
1 | Brazil 5-2 Sweden | 1958 |
2 | England 4-2 West Germany | 1966 |
2 | Uruguay 4-2 Argentina | 1930 |
2 | Italy 4-2 Hungary | 1938 |
2 | France 4-2 Croatia | 2018 |
2 | Argentina 3-3 France | 2022 |
7 | Brazil 4-1 Italy | 1970 |
7 | Argentina 3-2 West Germany | 1986 |
7 | West Germany 3-2 Hungary | 1954 |
10 | Brazil 3-1 Czechoslovakia | 1962 |
10 | Argentina 3-1 Netherlands | 1978 |
10 | Italy 3-1 Germany | 1982 |
Interestingly, the last two World Cup finals have made it onto this list after being high-scoring games themselves. Considering both finals contained six goals, we can hope the trend will continue in the upcoming tournament and that it might have another high-scoring affair in store for us!
The biggest World Cup winning margins
Though extremely rare, some games have been won by staggering nine-goal margins where one side is levels above the other. Below are the only three games to have ever been won by this many goals, making them the biggest World Cup winning margins:
Game and scoreline | Year | Round |
Hungary 9-0 South Korea | 1954 | Group stage |
Yugoslavia 9-0 Zaire | 1974 | Group stage |
Hungary 10-1 El Salvador | 1982 | Group stage |
Even though there have only been three wins by nine goals, there have certainly been other games won by large margins too that are worth mentioning.
Games won by eight goals are Sweden 8-0 Cuba (1938), Uruguay 8-0 Bolivia (1950), and Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia (2002).
Seven goal margins include Uruguay 7-0 Scotland (1954), Turkey 7-0 South Korea (1954), Poland 7-0 Haiti (1974), Portugal 7-0 North Korea (2010), and Spain 7-0 Costa Rica (2022).
Then wins by six goals are Italy 7-1 USA (1934), Brazil 7-1 Sweden (1950), Germany 7-1 Brazil (2014), Hungary 6-0 Dutch East Indies (1938), West Germany 6-0 Mexico (1978), Argentina 6-0 Peru (1978), Soviet Union 6-0 Hungary (1986), and Argentina 6-0 Serbia and Montenegro (2006).
So, it’s safe to say that the tournament has had its fair share of big wins!
