Spain are aiming to reach the final of the Women's Euros for the first time and Alexia Putellas' form gives them a real chance in Zurich.
Wednesday provides a heavyweight showdown in the second UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semi-final as giants Germany take on Spain at the Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich.
Germany needed a penalty shootout to see off France in their quarter-final having progressed from the group stages as runners-up after a heavy 4-1 defeat to Sweden.
Spain’s progress by contrast, has been serene with three wins from three in Group B and a comfortable 2-0 victory over hosts Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Spain to progress smoothly
World Cup holders Spain have never progressed beyond the semi-final stage at a European Championship, but they are strong favourites to change that this time around.
Germany, by contrast, are the most successful nation in the tournament’s history with eight titles from 13 editions. However, they go into this tie as clear underdogs, with Spain widely considered the form team over the past two years.
The head-to-head record and historical pedigree favour Germany, but recent performances suggest the tide has turned.
Spain have been dominant throughout the tournament, winning all four of their matches, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three times.
La Roja have cruised through the tournament with four wins from four, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three.
Germany, meanwhile, won their opening two matches, followed by a heavy loss in the final group game and a 1-1 draw against France before coming out on top via a penalty shootout.
That match will have taken a lot from the Germans, particularly given Kathrin-Julia Hendrich’s 13th-minute red card.
Spain have more than enough quality to end their poor run against Germany and, perhaps tellingly, an extra day’s rest ahead of this clash.

Putellas to continue fine form
Alexia Putellas has been one of the stars of the tournament, and the two-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner is among the favourites to win the player of the tournament award.
Putellas has scored three and assisted four in four matches and with the freedom she is given to attack from midfield, backing her to add to her tally is an appealing option.
Leg 2: Alexia Putellas to score @ 11/4
Goals expected in Zurich
Germany have won four of the past seven meetings with Spain, with the other three ending in draws. Only once in that run, a goalless draw, have the Germans failed to score.
While Spain are aiming for a first-ever victory over Germany, this current crop, fresh from their World Cup success, do not carry the baggage of previous generations and will not be overawed by the occasion.
Germany battled impressively to get past France in the quarter-final, including playing for 107 minutes with just ten women, and should not be discounted.
Even if Spain are rightly considered favourites, Germany are unlikely to go down without a fight and backing both teams to score looks a sensible option.
