A closer look at the players who’ve recorded the most goal contributions in a Premier League season

Now that you’ve seen an overview of the Premier League players with the most goals and assists in a single season, let’s have a look at how they achieved such unfathomable numbers. Below is a summary of each of their seasons and highlights of their achievements:

Mohammed Salah (2024/25) – 47

Breaking the record for goals and assists in a 38-game Premier League season, Mo Salah more than deserves to top this list. Spearheading Liverpool to a second Premier League crown and 20th league title, Salah was on a mission all season and helped them win comfortably – finishing ten points above second-placed Arsenal.

He totalled 29 goals and 18 assists throughout the campaign, even looking like he would break the assist record (20 at the time) for large stretches of the season. His inevitability during the campaign made him a feared opponent, earning him both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards.

Andy Cole (1993/94) – 47

Andy Cole’s record season at Newcastle United set the benchmark for elite attacking output, scoring 34 goals and registering 13 assists throughout the campaign. His efforts helped to take the Magpies to a third-place finish and even earned him the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season.

Impressively, none of his goals were scored from the penalty spot, emphasising how lethal he was given half a chance.

Alan Shearer (1994/95) – 47

As the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, it’s no surprise that Alan Shearer has made it onto this list. One season after Andy Cole had his record-breaking season, Shearer went and matched it exactly. Also scoring 34 goals and racking up 13 assists, he managed to equal Cole’s outstanding achievement.

His goals fired Blackburn to an astounding title win ahead of Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, scoring three hat-tricks in the process. His winning goal against Newcastle United in the final game of the season confirmed Rovers’ title victory, sealing this as a season for the history books.

Erling Haaland (2022/23) – 44

As far as debut seasons go, this has to be the best the Premier League has ever seen. The goalscoring machine, Erling Haaland, slotted right into Pep Guardiola’s team and hit the ground running.

With a goal in his first game against West Ham and 13 goals in seven games, it was clear to see he had records in his sights. He ended the season scoring more than a goal per game, netting 36 times in 35 appearances, which was no surprise considering he scored six hat-tricks. Ending with a title to his name as well makes this one of the most impressive individual campaigns any player has had.

Thierry Henry (2002/03) – 44

A player who many consider to be the best the Premier League has ever seen, Thierry Henry was a scary prospect for any defence he faced. Despite not winning the league this season, he was able to help Arsenal push eventual title winners Manchester United the whole season, using everything from his electric pace to his clinical finishing and creative abilities.

The campaign saw him rack up 24 goals and 20 assists, setting an assist record that stood up until the 2025/26 season. Though he was pipped to the Golden Boot by Ruud van Nistelrooy, he more than earned the Playmaker award, being at his creative best.

Luis Suarez (2013/14) – 42

Helping Liverpool stay in a title charge for most of the season, Luis Suarez almost single-handedly took the Reds to their first Premier League title. Despite missing out on the first five games of the season due to suspension from the previous season, the Uruguayan forward didn’t let this stop his exploits as he ripped apart defences for fun.

With an astounding ratio of 1.27 G/A per game, he has the best on this list, reaching his tally of 42 goal contributions in just 33 games!

Iconic moments such as his four stunning goals against Norwich at Anfield have not only become highlights of his season but made this game a Premier League all-time classic too.

Mohammed Salah (2017/18) – 42

A second appearance from Salah on this list comes as a result of his debut season for Liverpool. Returning to the Premier League after a spell at Chelsea, it was uncertain how he would perform given he had underwhelmed previously. He wasted no time, however, and slotted right into Jurgen Klopp’s team.

The Egyptian netted 32 times and broke the Premier League record for most goals scored in a 38-game season, even earning the Puskas award in the process after an incredible curled strike in the Merseyside Derby.

After a season like this he set the standards for his nine-year stint at the club, which he maintained through a magnificent level of consistency.

Didier Drogba (2009/10) – 39

Legendary Chelsea striker, Didier Drogba, was an established player at Stamford Bridge – five years into his time at the club – and in his prime.

His 29 goals and ten assists fired Carlo Ancelotti’s team to win the league, scoring in huge games and moments. His hat-trick against Wigan on the final day not only sealed the title but won him the Golden Boot at the same time. Considering he only scored one penalty all season there’s even more reason to be impressed by his outstanding season.

Thierry Henry (2004/05) – 39

The second player to be featured on this list twice, Henry had another outstanding season in the 2004/05 campaign. Off the back of ‘The Invincibles’ season, the Frenchman was continuing to prove he was one of the best players in the world.

His 25 goals and 14 assists unfortunately couldn’t win his side another Premier League title, with Chelsea’s incredible defensive displays proving too efficient. However, his season was outstanding nonetheless, with his output absolutely proving his status as a Premier League legend.

Robin van Persie (2011/12) – 39

Though many might remember him for firing Manchester United to the title in 2012/13, Robin van Persie’s efforts in the 2011/12 season were even better. His 30 goals and nine assists weren’t enough to win the Premier League – only guiding Arsenal to third place – but they more than earned him the Golden Boot.

His campaign contained some special strikes, with his left-footed volley against Everton being a particularly good entry to his goal catalogue.

Who has recorded the most Premier League goal contributions ever?

So, that’s a summary of the most goal contributions in a season, but what about in the Premier League’s entire history? Who’s the all-time leader for the most goals and assists in the league’s history?

  • Alan Shearer, the league’s all-time top goalscorer, is unsurprisingly topping this list as well. His 260 goals and 64 assists leave him with a total of 324 goal contributions.

  • Man United legend, Wayne Rooney, then closely follows this up with 308 goal contributions made up of 208 goals and 100 assists.

  • Mo Salah completes the podium in third place, with his tally of 287 goal contributions coming from 193 goals and 94 assists.

With no active Premier League players remaining near the top of this list, it’ll certainly be interesting to see which stars will emerge as goal-producing machines in the years to come.
