Of Chelsea’s current first‑team squad, Hato is the sole Dutch representative, but he will be joined by Strasbourg captain Emmanuel Emegha next season.
They are the latest in a proud lineage of Oranje stars who chose to make their mark in West London.
With the club’s recruitment strategy continuing to cast a wide net across Europe, the Dutch influence – past and present – remains a fascinating thread in Chelsea’s history.
We have taken a look at some of the most notable Dutch players to have pulled on the famous blue shirt, and you can also visit our football betting page to find out all the odds and markets for the Blues’ next game.
Dutch Chelsea players with 100+ appearances
We’ll first take a look at the Dutch players with the most appearances for Chelsea: those who represented the club on more than 100 occasions.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (177 appearances, 87 goals)
Striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink became an instant hero at Stamford Bridge after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2000.
He scored on his Blues debut against Manchester United to help secure the Charity Shield and went on to add a further 86 goals in 177 total appearances for the club.
Beyond the numbers, Hasselbaink’s work rate, physicality and big‑game temperament made him a firm fan favourite.
His legacy endures as one of the most clinical finishers of the Premier League era and one of Chelsea’s greatest Dutch imports.
Ed de Goey (175 appearances)
Signed from Feyenoord in 1997, Ed de Goey became a dependable presence between the sticks during a period of rapid change for the club.
The towering goalkeeper made more than 150 appearances and was part of the squad that lifted the 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup, the 1998 League Cup and the 2000 FA Cup.
De Goey’s shot‑stopping ability and calm temperament made him a fan favourite and he remains one of the most successful Dutch players to have represented the Blues.
Mario Melchiot (165 appearances, 5 goals)
Mario Melchiot joined Chelsea from Ajax in 1999 and quickly established himself as a reliable and attacking right‑back.
Known for his marauding runs and defensive discipline, he spent five seasons in West London and played a key role in the club’s transition into the Roman Abramovich era.
Melchiot won the 2000 FA Cup and made over 150 appearances before departing for Birmingham City in 2004.
Arjen Robben (106 appearances, 19 goals)
One of the most electrifying wingers of his generation, Arjen Robben joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2004 and immediately set the Premier League alight.
Blessed with blistering pace, a lethal left foot and a knack for beating defenders at will, Robben was instrumental in Chelsea’s back‑to‑back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 under Jose Mourinho. He also lifted the League Cup and FA Cup during his three‑year spell at the Bridge.
Injuries prevented him from reaching even greater heights with the Blues, but his impact was undeniable and Robben remains one of the most gifted players ever to wear Chelsea blue.
Other Dutch players who have played for Chelsea
Ruud Gullit (63 appearances, 7 goals)
One of the most iconic figures in world football in the late 1980s and early 90s, Ruud Gullit arrived at Chelsea in 1995 and immediately elevated the club’s profile.
Initially signed as a player, the former AC Milan superstar dazzled supporters with his elegance, versatility and leadership.
Gullit made over 60 appearances for the Blues and was appointed player‑manager in 1996, guiding the club to FA Cup glory in 1997 – Chelsea’s first major trophy in 26 years.
His impact on and off the pitch helped usher in a new era of ambition at Stamford Bridge, laying the foundations for the success that followed.
Winston Bogarde (12 appearances)
Perhaps one of the most infamous signings in Chelsea history, Winston Bogarde arrived with a glittering CV after glorious stints at Ajax and Barcelona, but his time at the club was anything but smooth.
Limited opportunities, managerial changes and injuries meant the defender made just 12 appearances across four seasons.
Despite the difficulties, Bogarde remains a memorable figure in the club’s Dutch narrative, albeit for reasons he would likely prefer to forget.
Khalid Boulahrouz (20 appearances)
Nicknamed “The Cannibal” for his aggressive defensive style, Khalid Boulahrouz joined the Blues from Hamburg in 2006.
Although his versatility allowed him to play across the backline, injuries and competition for places limited his influence to a mere 20 appearances before loan spells and an eventual departure.
Patrick van Aanholt (8 appearances, 1 goal)
A product of Chelsea’s academy, Patrick van Aanholt joined the club as a teenager and made a handful of senior appearances between 2009 and 2014.
While he never fully broke into the first team, he gained valuable experience on multiple loan spells before forging a successful Premier League career elsewhere.
Nathan Aké (17 appearances)
Another Cobham graduate, Nathan Aké joined Chelsea at 16 and was widely regarded as one of the club’s brightest defensive prospects.
Calm on the ball and tactically intelligent, he made 17 senior appearances and was part of the squad that won the 2015 League Cup and 2017 Premier League title.
Despite his promise, competition for places saw him move to Bournemouth in 2017, where he blossomed before earning a big‑money move to Manchester City.
Ian Maatsen (16 appearances)
Ian Maatsen joined Chelsea’s academy in 2018 and steadily rose through the ranks as a left‑back who was equally comfortable playing further forward.
After impressive loan spells at Coventry City and Burnley, Maatsen broke into Chelsea’s senior squad and made 15 of his 16 senior appearances in 2023.
But he enjoyed greater success during a five-month loan stint at Borussia Dortmund, helping them reach the 2024 Champions League final before a permanent exit to Aston Villa later that summer.
Current Dutch Chelsea Players
Jorrel Hato (28 appearances, 1 goal)
One of the brightest young talents in Dutch football, Jorrel Hato made the switch from Ajax to Chelsea in August at the age of 19 with more than 100 competitive matches already under his belt.
A composed, left‑sided defender with maturity beyond his years, Hato has already shown the positional awareness and ball‑playing ability that made him a standout in the Eredivisie.
