Who are the most successful international football teams? Read here for the countries with the most trophies, including Argentina and Brazil.
The most successful international football teams have regularly collected silverware. For these countries, a run to the semi-finals is never good enough; it’s about consistent success on the continental and worldwide stages.
International football isn’t just about the World Cup, though. Some countries that are no more than football betting outsiders for the World Cup have amassed plenty of trophies thanks to their successes in continental competitions like AFCON, European Championships, and Copa America.
10. Spain
For decades, Spain were perennial underachievers. Heading into the Euro 2008, they had two major titles (1964 Euros and 1992 Olympics). Fast forward to 2026, and they’ve got a World Cup, three more European Championships, and a Nations League under their belt.
La Roja are primed to climb this table further in the years to come, particularly at this summer’s tournament, where they are the favourites in the World Cup betting. After a barren few years following their Euros win in 2012, the Spaniards are once again a force to be reckoned with.
Trophy | Times won | Years won |
World Cup | 1 | 2010 |
European Championship | 4 | 1964, 2008, 2012, 2024 |
UEFA Nations League | 1 | 2023 |
Olympics | 1 | 1992 |
9. Egypt
Egypt are the most successful country in AFCON history with seven titles. Their World Cup record is underwhelming, however, having only qualified for the tournament on four occasions (including 2026) and with no wins to their name.
The Pharaohs lost the AFCON final in 2017 and 2021, otherwise they would be higher on this list.
Trophy | Times won | Years won |
AFCON | 7 | 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2010 |
8. Italy
Italy’s standing in the world game has taken a hit in recent years, despite the Euros win in 2020. They failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and fell at the round of 16 at Euro 2024.
For all their success, Italy have been far from a dominant force over the last 10 years. Their performance at Euro 2020 was very much an outlier in what has been a difficult period.

World Cup | 4 | 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006 |

7. France
Much like Spain, France have evolved into a perennial contender in the 21st century. Les Bleus won the World Cup in 1998 followed by the Euros two years later. Confederations Cup wins in 2001 and 2003 bolstered their trophy haul.
Boasting a deep pool of highly talented players over the last decade or so, France won the World Cup in 2018 and the Nations League in 2021. They lost the 2022 World Cup final on penalties to Argentina at the end of arguably the most dramatic match ever played.

Confederations Cup | 2 | 2001, 2003 |
UEFA Nations League | 1 | 2021 |
6. Germany
Between 2002 and 2016, Germany won a World Cup, and reached the semi-finals or better at seven other major tournaments. The Confederations Cup win in 2017 was the last time Die Mannschaft was seriously competitive on the biggest stage, however.

Confederations Cup | 1 | 2017 |
5. United States
Despite winning less than 25% of their World Cup matches, 2026 joint-hosts the United States are incredibly among the most decorated countries. This can partly be put down to the Gold Cup being played every two years and a much lower standard of competition than European or South American countries face in their equivalent tournaments.
The U.S. have reached at least the semi-finals of the Gold Cup in every edition since 2000. And they have played in four out of five finals since 2015.

CONCACAF Nations League | 3 | 2020, 2023, 2024 |
4. Mexico
Winners of three of the last four Gold Cups and 13-time champions overall, Mexico are a long way clear of their rivals in total trophy count. Notably, the 2022 World Cup was the first time they failed to reach the knockout rounds of the tournament since they were banned for the 1990 edition.

Gold Cup | 13 | 1965, 1971, 1977, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023, 2025 |
Confederations Cup | 1 | 1999 |
CONCACAF Nations League | 1 | 2025 |
3. Brazil
It might surprise some people to see Brazil only in third. They are the most successful team in World Cup history, and are often considered the gold standard for international football.
Expectations are always high and the pressure has, at times, proved too much for modern Brazilian players. They haven’t won the World Cup since 2002 and didn’t even reach the semi-finals of the most recent edition of the Copa America.

2. Uruguay
Winners of the inaugural World Cup and one of the best teams in the world throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, Uruguay have only won one trophy since 1995.
The 2024 Copa America was their first semi-final appearance in a major tournament since they won the competition 13 years prior. And, perhaps surprisingly, have only won knockout ties at two World Cups since 1970.

1. Argentina
From the glories of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s through to the days of Diego Maradona, Argentina have always been in the mix for major honours. In the 21st century, Lionel Messi has carried the country’s hopes, but had to wait until his twilight years for success.
The 2022 World Cup saw Messi finally get his hands on the World Cup. Argentina followed up by winning their 16th Copa America two years later, and they have another chance to add to their illustrious history this summer as they once again feature among the favourites in the World Cup winner betting.
