Australian Open Final: War of attrition expected between the baseline’s best

Both men playing for history in first slam final of the year

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray first met in a Spanish junior tournament when they were just 12 years old, with Djokovic winning in a final set epic. Whilst both players have evolved significantly since then, the 24th instalment in their rivalry looks likely to see a familiar outcome.

History is on the line for both players. Djokovic, priced at 4/9 on, is aiming to become the first player to lift five Australian Open titles whilst Murray, a 15/8 shot, looks to become the first Brit to win three out of the four tennis majors. Motivation should not be a problem in this one.

Djokovic leads the head to head series 15-8, yet their matches have always been tough battles and there is no reason why this one should be any different. They have played five times in slams, with two going the distance, and just one ending in three sets.

It’s very difficult to separate the pair in this one and this again alludes to a long drawn out match. Djokovic enjoyed a sensational end to 2014, winning Beijing, Paris and London, and as a four time champion and world number one it’s his to lose. Murray on the other hand has been playing sublime tennis this tournament and has looked the stand out player. With the quicker conditions likely to suit his game more than Novak he too has a legitimate shot at victory.

With these things considered the best bet looks to be Djokovic to win 3-2 which is available at 5/1. The match is very likely to go the distance with these two players cancelling each other out from the back of the court, and whilst unconvincing in his semi final victory, Djokovic should just have the edge when the going gets tough as he previously has had in the pairs history.

Get the popcorn ready.

Recommended Bet:

Djokovic 3-2 – 5/1
