ATP Nice Preview

The 6 foot 10 American has hit a purple patch of form, and can dominate with his serve in a weak Nice field

John Isner’s career was in disarray just a couple of months ago. A devastating Davis Cup defeat to Great Britain capped off a miserable run of form and injuries in which the American saw his ranking drop 23 places.

To many experts’ surprise, however, the defeat has been a trigger to the remarkable purple patch he is now enjoying.

Only Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Tomas Berdych have been able to defeat the world number 17 in recent months, as Isner has consistently powered his way towards the latter stages of Masters 1000 events.

Under the expert guidance of coach Justin Gimelstop, Isner will be looking to go one further this week in Nice, where he faces a much weaker field than he is usually accustomed to.

With defending champion Ernest Gulbis completely out of sorts this campaign, Isner’s only competition looks to be in the form of the Frenchman, Gilles Simon. Gilles may have the backing of a raucous home crowd this week, but has form and history against him in the matchup against John, as he trails the head to head 3-0. If the pair do meet in the final, then Isner would undoubtedly start as favourite.

A champion in Houston, and multiple-time finalist in Belgrade, Isner is no stranger to clay court success and will thrive on the quick conditions this week in Nice. If ‘Big John’ can continue recent serving streaks, such as remaining unbroken in 98 consecutive games, then he will prove a very tough cookie to beat and represents great value.
