From pizza to wings, Betway’s new study has revealed the best cities in the US for some of our favorite types of takeout.
Whether you’re catching your favorite basketball team in action, or sitting down for Sunday Night Football, there’s no better accompaniment than your favorite takeout. You might be a pizza lover or a burger fanatic, but which cities come out on top when it comes to takeout food?
To find out, the sports betting team here at Betway has conducted a new study using Uber Eats data to reveal once and for all which US cities are the best for the ultimate at-home-dining experience. We’ve looked at over 50 cities across the country, assessing the average price for pizza, wings, and burgers, as well as the number of takeout restaurants offering each cuisine.
Best cities for takeout in the US
According to the study, Philadelphia ranks as the number one city in the US for takeout. It’s the best spot for pizza across the country, with cheese and tomato costing an average of $15.19, plus there are 491 different pizza places to choose from. Philly also claims the top spot for takeout burgers. An average burger will cost around $10.17 here, which is the cheapest of all cities in the study.
Coming in second place overall is Baltimore. In particular, the city has ranked as the number one city in the US for chicken wings. It offers the cheapest price for wings across the whole of the US, with six costing as little as $7.76, and over 400 places in the city that dish them up.
In third place is Nashville, with particular highlights being its wing and burger offerings. Six wings in Tennessee’s capital will set residents back around $9.59, while a classic cheeseburger costs around $11.94 in the city.
Following in fourth is Chicago. It’s interesting to note that while the city ranks high for its burgers, it doesn’t feature within the top five best takeout pizza cities, despite being renowned for its very own Chicago-style deep-dish pizza.
Best cities for pizza in the US
Deep dish? New York Style? Whatever your preferences, pizza is a definite crowd-pleaser. To reveal the best places in the US for pizza, our study looked at the cost of a cheese pizza from the top five rated takeout restaurants in each city, as well as the number of places that serve the doughy dish.
1. Philadelphia
Taking the crown as the best spot in the US for takeout pizza is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city has the most pie-slinging takeout restaurants of any location in the study, with a huge 491 to choose from. Coming out on top with an Uber Eats rating of 5/5, Pat’s Pizza and Pasta is clearly the place to go in the city.
Philly might not be home to the cheapest pizza, with a classic cheese pizza costing an average of $15.19, but compared to the most expensive version of the dish, which can be found in Portland at the grand total of $26.10, Philadelphia’s pizzas are a bargain.
2. Miami
Coming in second is Miami, Florida. Pizza is slightly cheaper here, with an average cheese pizza/pie costing $14.24 — the third cheapest price of any city in the study.
The ‘305’ also has 426 different pizza places to choose from, or in other words, 10 spots per every 10,000 people. The likes of Pizza Deli & Company and Mamma Dora’s Pizzeria both have a very appetizing 4.9 stars.
3. Washington D.C.
Home to the cheapest pizza in the country (or at least in our study), Washington D.C has come in third. A cheese pizza in the city costs just $13.05, on average.
There are slightly fewer takeout pizza spots here than in the rest of the top five, but with 352 dotted across the city, there’s still plenty of variety. In terms of where to head? Well, Pizza D’oro and Edith’s Pizza both serve up all the classics and have a perfect rating of 5 stars.
4. Baltimore
In fourth place is Baltimore, Maryland. An average pizza is a little pricier here than in the likes of Miami or Washington D.C, at $15.29.
However, there are 415 different pizza places to choose from, including Tre Fratelli Italian Ristorante which has a 4.9-star rating and prides itself on serving up handcrafted and authentic Italian dishes.
5. Los Angeles
Rounding off the top five best cities in the US is Los Angeles. A classic cheese pizza in the city costs around $15.80, which, while pricier than the rest of the top five, is still pretty reasonable compared with other places across the country.
There’s 365 takeout pizza spots in the California city too, including Bravo Pizza on Hollywood Boulevard which has a top rating of 5 out of 5. However given the size of the city, this does equate to just one place per every 10,000 people.
Best cities for Wings in the US
For those after a bit more bite, we’ve also taken a look at which US cities are the best for takeout wings. We’ve looked at the cost of six chicken wings from the top five highest-rated wing restaurants on Uber Eats, and we’ve also ranked the cities based on how many restaurants serve up wings in each city.
1. Baltimore
Not only has Baltimore ranked on the top five list of best places for takeout pizza, but it also comes in as the number one city in the US for chicken wings. It offers the cheapest price for wings across the whole of the US, with six wings costing as little as $7.76.
Whether you prefer BBQ, buffalo, or honey mustard, there’s also 404 places that serve up the tasty snack across the city. This means there’s around seven wing stops for every 10,000 people living in Baltimore. BRD in Federal Hill comes highly recommended with a 4.5-star rating, offering wings slathered in hot honey, sesame BBQ and mustard sauces, to name just a few.
2. Nashville
Coming in second place is Nashville. Clearly the home of country music is also home to a good chicken wing! Six wings in Tennessee’s capital will set you back around $9.59, which, while pricier than in Baltimore, is still pretty reasonable.
Nashville has 411 takeout wing spots — the fourth highest amount of any city in the study. Waldo’s Chicken and Beer is located right in the heart of Nashville, and serves up wings in a variety of different tosses and sauces, plus you can even choose to have your wings extra crispy.
3. Philadelphia
In third place is Philadelphia. The city has a huge 443 different restaurants serving up wings, which is the most of any cities analyzed. Dave & Busters has a top rating of 5 stars, and serves up everything from wings and strips, to burgers and flatbreads.
Wings in Philly might be slightly pricier than in the rest of the top five, with six wings costing an average of $10.82, though this is still significantly cheaper than in the likes of Austin, Texas where six wings will set you back a whopping $18.96.
4. San Francisco
With six wings in the city averaging a very reasonable $8.31, San Francisco has come in fourth place.
Whether you’re heading to Loaded Fries N’Wings or picking from Breaded Wings Co.’s extensive menu, there are 362 restaurants in SF serving up tasty dishes for all you chicken lovers out there.
5. Indianapolis
Rounding off the top five best cities in the US for takeout wings is Indianapolis. Six wings average $8.09 in Indiana’s capital, which is the third lowest price in the study.
The city also has 338 different spots that will deliver wings straight to your door.
Best cities for burgers in the US
It wouldn’t be a top takeout ranking without the inclusion of the humble hamburger. For the purposes of the study, we’ve looked at the cost of one cheeseburger, as well as the number of restaurants that offer takeout burgers in each city.
1. Philadelphia
Having been crowned the best US city for pizzas, and ranking in third for wings, Philly has also claimed the number one spot for takeout cheeseburgers. An average burger will cost around $10.17 in the city, which is the cheapest of all locations in the study.
Not only are burgers very affordable here, but there’s also a whole host of different places serving them up, with 485 takeout burger restaurants in the city – the highest of any location analyzed. With a 4.9 rating on Uber Eats, Devil’s Alley Bar and Grill seems like a good place to head, with their unique burgers ranging from guacamole and salmon to turkey and chorizo.
2. Chicago
Chicago, Illinois has come in second place, with a cheeseburger costing around $10.92 — the third highest of any city in the study.
Chi-town also has a lot of burger joints to choose from, with 471 offering to deliver straight to your door. Burger Baron seems to know what they’re talking about, and with a 5-star rating, plus over 15 different burgers to pick from, this could be your new favorite burger spot.
3. New York City
In third place is New York City. A classic cheeseburger will set residents back $11.49, plus there’s 443 burger-slinging places in the city — the third highest amount of any location analyzed.
West 4th Marketplace has a top rating of 5 stars, and serves up everything from burgers and sandwiches to smoothies and bagels.
4. Atlanta
Coming in fourth is Atlanta, Georgia. There are lots of burger spots to choose from in ATL, with 439 dotted around the city — or nine per every 10,000 people. Located inside the O4W Market, Melt Kitchen comes highly recommended with a 4.9 rating.
However, cheeseburgers are a little pricier in Atlanta than in the rest of the top five, averaging $12.11.
5. Nashville
Rounding off the top five best US cities for takeaway cheeseburgers is Nashville. A classic cheeseburger costs around $11.94 in the city, plus there’s 391 different burger takeout spots on offer.

Methodology & Sources
Betway pulled together a seedlist of the top 50 cities in the US. They then used Uber Eats data to determine the best takeout cities. The cities were ranked according to the following metrics:
- Cost of a pizza – price of a cheese pizza from the top five restaurants was gathered, an average cost was then calculated.
- Number of pizza restaurants
- Cost of wings – price of buffalo wings from the top five restaurants was gathered, an average cost for six wings was then calculated.
- Number of restaurants serving wings
- Cost of a cheeseburger – price of a cheeseburger from the top five restaurants was gathered, an average cost was then calculated.
- Number of hamburger restaurants
