Best cities for pizza in the UK
Woodfired? Stuffed crust? Pepperoni? Pineapple? Whatever your preferences, pizza is a definite crowd-pleaser when it comes to a tasty night in. To reveal the best places in the UK for pizza, our study looked at the cost of a classic Margherita from the top five highest-rated takeaway restaurants in each city, as well as the number of places that serve the doughy dish.
According to our research, Liverpool is the official ‘pizza capital’ of the UK. The average price of a cheese and tomato pizza in the Northern city is as low as £5.88 — which actually makes it the cheapest place to pick up a takeaway pizza in the whole country. In comparison, the most expensive Margherita can be found in Luton, with one pizza costing almost double, at £13.32.
Great for those who think variety is the spice of life, Liverpool also has a huge number of pizza restaurants to choose from, with 533 dotted around the city. Some of the top-rated takeaway places include Pizza Rojin which has a huge 4.8 rating on Uber Eats, and Pitfire Neapolitan Pizza, with a rating of 4.7.
Coming in second place is another Northern city, Preston. A Margherita pizza in the city tends to cost around £8.59, which, while a little pricier than in Liverpool, is still the second cheapest of any city in the study.
Plus, there are even more restaurants serving up slices of doughy goodness, with 551 places dishing out pizza around the city. This equates to a huge 18 pizzas places per every 10,000 people. According to ratings, one of the best places to grab pizza in the city is The Moorbrook Pub, which serves up woodfired pizzas either in-house or delivered to your door.
The North really is coming out on top when it comes to takeaway pizzas. A Margherita in the city might cost almost double that of Liverpool’s, with prices averaging £10, but Leeds takes the crown as having the highest number of takeaway pizza restaurants in the whole of the UK.
There’s 558 places for all you pizza-lovers out there to choose from, or 12 for every 10,000 people, and Pizza House Company is maybe the best one to try, with residents giving it a top rating of 4.9.
We’re not venturing too far south as we head down the list, as Coventry has come in fourth. Although not as many as in Leeds or Preston, the Midlands city still has a lot of pizza restaurants on offer, with 518 across the city. In fact, this equates to 14 per every 10,000 people, which is a pretty healthy ratio if you ask us.
Picking up a Margherita will also set you back just £9.57, so you’re getting a little more for your money here compared to in Leeds.
Rounding off the top five is another Midlands city, Nottingham. Home to the third cheapest pizza in the UK, with a cheese and tomato pie costing just £8.79, the likes of Amico’s Pizza and Baba Dough are rated highly.
Nottingham might have the fewest pizza restaurants out of the whole of the top five, but there’s still plenty to choose from, with 429 places in the city.
Best cities for Indian in the UK
For those after a bit more spice, we’ve also taken a look at which UK cities are the best for Indian takeaways. Given it’s one of the most popular dishes for Brits, we’ve looked at the cost of a Chicken Tikka Masala from the top five highest rated Indian restaurants on Uber Eats. We’ve also ranked the cities based on how many Indian restaurants they offer.
Often credited as the culinary birthplace of the Balti, it’s perhaps no surprise that Birmingham has been crowned the best city in the UK for Indian takeaways. Brummies can rejoice in the knowledge that they can get a whole dish for under a tenner, with an average Chicken Tikka Masala costing just £9.49.
Birmingham also has the second-highest number of Indian takeaway restaurants in the whole of the UK, with 584 across the city. However, given the size of the city, this does equate to just six per every 10,000 people. The likes of Sangam 2 and Al Faisals serve up all the classics, and both have a great rating of 4.6.
In second place is neighbouring city Wolverhampton. The average Chicken Tikka Masala is just a little pricier here, at £10.10. However, there are 587 different places across the city that will bring your favourite Indian dish straight to your door — the most of any location analysed. With Wolverhampton’s population being slightly on the smaller side, this means there’s a huge 23 Indian takeaway spots per every 10,000 people, including the 4.7-rated Penn Tandoori.
Glasgow comes in third. An average Chicken Tikka Masala in the Scottish capital will set residents back just £9.10 — the fourth cheapest price of all cities in the study.
The city also has 302 Indian takeaway places, which, while significantly less than Birmingham or Wolverhampton, is still plenty enough to choose from. Obsession of India is one of the most popular in the city, with a rating of 4.8.
Home to the cheapest Chicken Tikka Masala in the country, Blackpool ranks in fourth. The dish costs just £8.04 on average in the coastal town, however Blackpool does have the fewest Indian takeaway spots in the whole of the top five, with just 142 on offer — or six per every 10,000 people.
It might not have the quantity of Indian takeaways, but it definitely seems to have the quality, with the likes of The Eastern Spice and Sai Surbhi Indian Restaurant receiving rave reviews of 4.8.
Rounding off the top five best cities in the UK for Indian takeaways is Luton. The city has 565 different spots to grab your favourite curry, though a classic Chicken Tikka Masala could set you back as much as £10.88 in the southern city. This still isn’t the most expensive price for the dish though, as curries in Milton Keynes average around £11.89.
Best cities for Chinese in the UK
It wouldn’t be a top takeaway ranking without the inclusion of Chinese cuisine. For the purposes of the study, we’ve looked at the cost of Chicken Chow Mein, as well as the number of Chinese restaurants that offer takeaway in each city.
Coming in first for all things Chinese food is Wolverhampton. The city offers the third cheapest price for a standard Chicken Chow Mein dish, at £8.10. It also has the joint highest number of Chinese takeaway spots in the whole of the UK, with 545 to choose from. In other words, you could eat at a different one every week for over 10 years!
In terms of where’s good for your next Chinese fix, restaurants like The Golden Boat and Pang’s Express are rated very highly, and serve all the classics from Sweet and Sour Chicken to Beef Szechuan.
In second place is Luton. The city is home to the same number of Chinese takeaway spots as Wolverhampton, with 545 different places to try. When looking at restaurant to population ratios, that’s a whopping 21 Chinese takeaway spots for every 10,000 people living in the city. According to Uber Eats, Paya comes pretty well rated, with 4.4 stars, and serves Dim Sum and Thai dishes too.
A Chicken Chow Mein is slightly pricier in Luton, with the dish costing an average of £8.99 in the city. Compare this to London though, where an average Chow Mein costs £12.45, and Luton’s prices seem like a bargain!
Birmingham ranks as the third-best city for Chinese takeaways. The city boasts the second cheapest price for a Chicken Chow Mein, with an average dish costing just £7.87.
There are slightly fewer options when it comes to Chinese restaurants though, with 292 dotted across the city. This might be nearly half the number than in Wolverhampton or Luton, but it still leaves residents with plenty of choice.
Residents in Birmingham might want to check out Pepper Chef, which has a rating of 4.7, or for those who want a bit of fusion, Rayu Pan Asian serves up everything from Chop Suey and Korean BBQ to Nasi Goreng and Katsu Curry.
In fourth is Southampton. A Chicken Chow Mein in the coastal city costs a very reasonable £8.14, though it does have only 128 Chinese takeaway restaurants to choose from. This means there’s as little as five restaurants serving Chinese food per every 10,000 people.
5. Kingston upon Hull
Rounding off the top five best cities in the UK for Chinese takeaways is Hull. The Northern city boasts the cheapest price for Chicken Chow Mein of all cities in the study, with one serving costing just £7.87.
There are however only 20 Chinese restaurants to sample in the city, so residents are a little limited when it comes to variety. But, when you’ve got 4.9-star restaurants like Peking Garden on your doorstep, you might not be too disappointed with the lack of choice.
We’ve got tons of sports action hitting our screens over the next few months, whether we’ll be watching the Six Nations in February, the F1 season starting again in March, The Masters in April, or the Euros in June.
