Introduced in 2016, the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle goes by a couple of names: its registered title, the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, is in honour of the celebrated mare who remains the only horse to win both the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup, while it is also currently run under the title of the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, who have sponsored the event since 2022.
Open to mares and fillies aged four and over, it is a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race spanning across a distance of approximately 2 miles 1 furlong with 8 hurdles needing to be jumped over the course of the race.

Superstar Irish trainer Willie Mullins has entered more than 50 horses for this year’s novice and juvenile races at Cheltenham, but he’ll be eyeing success in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle with Bambino Fever, who’s currently the ante-post favourite to win.
Meanwhile, 2025’s winning trainer, Henry de Bromhead, is hoping to claim a third career win in the race with Echoing Silence. If he’s successful, he’ll be one step closer to equalling Mullins’ record of training five winners in the race.
