The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is the opening race of the Cheltenham Festival, open to horses aged four or over who haven’t won a hurdle race before the current National Hunt season.

As the first event at one of the biggest festivals in the horse racing calendar, it’s known for the “Cheltenham roar”, which is the name given to the crowd’s cheers as the race begins.

If you’re looking to get involved in the action at Prestbury Park this year, you can check all the latest Cheltenham Festival betting odds at Betway – or read on to see how you can put a wager on this year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle!

How to read Supreme Novices’ Hurdle odds

Our Supreme Novices’ Hurdle odds are presented in fractional terms. This means each horse has been assigned a fraction to represent its chances of winning, as well as the amount of money you could earn from a successful bet on it.

You can work out how much your bet could win by dividing your stake by the number on the right-hand side of the fraction. Then, multiply the result by the number on the left-hand side of the fraction. If you bet correctly, you’ll receive that amount of money on top of your original stake.

For more information, you can read our ‘Fractional odds explained’ guide, or use our betting calculator for a quick and easy way to check your potential winnings.

Example of a Supreme Novices’ Hurdle bet

Let’s use a real-world example of a Supreme Novices’ Hurdle bet to show how fractional odds work. In this scenario, Old Park Star is the favourite to win at odds of 5/8, while Talk The Talk has odds of 8/1.

Betting £10 on Old Park Star would win you £6.25 (10 ÷ 8 = 1.25, then 1.25 x 5 = 6.25). Your original £10 stake would also be returned, giving you a total return of £16.25.

However, the same £10 could earn you much more money if you placing a winning bet on Talk The Talk. If he wins, you could earn £80 (10 ÷ 1 = 10, then 10 x 8 = 80), plus your original stake for a total return of £90.

A bet on Old Park Star is deemed more likely to be successful, but a bet on Talk The Talk would provide a higher return in the event of a win.

Different types of Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting

We offer a variety of ways to bet on the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, so you can play however you prefer. Here are some of the betting types on offer:

Accumulator

A Supreme Novices’ Hurdle accumulator, or ‘acca’, is a bet that features multiple wagers in one. You’ll only receive a payout if each of the bets is correct, so there’s an extra element of risk as you’ll need to predict the result of multiple races, but the payout can be considerably bigger than placing singles.

For example, you could place an acca bet on the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle along with other day 1 races, and test your prediction skills across the whole day of action.

Winner

The most common type of Supreme Novices’ Hurdle bet is a wager placed on a horse to win the race. If your chosen horse wins, you’ll receive a payout depending on their odds of winning – it’s that simple!

To place

If you’re confident in a horse’s ability, but not sure that they’ll finish first in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, you can choose a bet for your horse to place. These bets pay out if your horse finishes in the top 3 or 4 of your chosen event, so you can still earn your stake back even if they miss out on first.

Each-way

Each-way bets include two wagers: one for a horse to win, and another for the same horse to place. This provides a bit of insurance, as you’ll still receive a payout for your horse placing in the top 4 of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, but you’ll receive even more money from a winner, as both bets will be correct.

Ante-post

Ante-post bets are placed far in advance of your chosen horse race, typically before the final list of competitors has even been announced. Since horses can withdraw ahead of the event or suffer injuries, they’re generally available at longer odds than bets made closer to the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
