The Gold Cup and Grand National are two of the biggest National Hunt Calendar events but has anyone won both? Find out which horses, jockeys and trainers have.
If you were to pinpoint the biggest races in the National Hunt calendar, the first two, most would say, are undoubtedly the Gold Cup and the Grand National. Triumphing in just one is a massive achievement, but adding your name to both the Gold Cup winners list and the Grand National winners list is something truly special.
There are a select few who have managed this accomplishment so far, including horses, jockeys, and trainers. But who are they, and when did they complete this great feat?
Read on to discover who has won both the Gold Cup and Grand National, alongside those who may be the next to join them on the list!
Horses who’ve won the Gold Cup and Grand National double
Despite the Gold Cup and Grand National holding so much history, having been established in 1924 and 1839 respectively, only two horses have ever managed to win both. This just goes to show how great a horse must be to create a legacy in both events.
Golden Miller was the first to achieve this accomplishment, winning his first of five Gold Cups in 1932 and his only Grand National in 1934. As the most successful horse in the Gold Cup’s existence, Golden Miller has etched his name into the history books by demonstrating pure dominance, winning five years running between 1932 and 1936. Combining this with his Grand National triumph easily makes him one of the best to have ever competed.
L’Escargot is the only other horse to have followed up Golden Miller’s feat of winning both events, getting his first taste of victory in the Gold Cup in 1970 and his Grand National win in 1975. By winning the Gold Cup in 1971 as well, making it back-to-back wins, he more than deserves this legendary reputation.

Is anyone likely to become a Gold Cup and Grand National double winner this season?
Now that we’ve talked a lot about horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners who have won in both races, let’s look towards the future instead.
It is certainly an exciting prospect when looking at the two events, with highly competitive lineups featuring in both races. This makes picking out who might become double winners hard, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t a few candidates that will be pushing to add this achievement to their list of accomplishments:
Horses who might become Gold Cup and Grand National winners
Inothewayurthinkin: Defying odds to win the Gold Cup in 2025 more than confirmed him as a force to be reckoned with. Being a horse backed to win both events, there’s every chance he can complete the double this year and win the so-far elusive Grand National.
I Am Maximus: As winner of the 2024 Grand National, he has certainly proven to be a top-quality horse. Though not favourite for the Gold Cup, he has a chance to pull off the feat, given his record.
Nick Rockett: Winning the 2025 Grand National means he is the one to beat this time around. Despite that, he remains an outsider for the Gold Cup – but with a lucky break, it may just be his year.
Jockeys looking to earn the Gold Cup and Grand National double
Mark Walsh: Winning the Gold Cup with Inothewayurthinkin last time out puts him in good stead for success in 2026. Especially considering the pair are favourites to win both events this year, don’t be surprised if they end up making history.
Jack Kennedy: Victory in the Gold Cup in 2021 with Minella Indo is Kennedy’s biggest feat to date, and with the potential to ride Henry De Bromhead’s Monty’s Star at the Grand National, he could pull through for the double.
Harry Skelton: Having not won either race will be motivation for Harry Skelton, as he will ride Grey Dawning, who is already a Grade 1 winner, at the Gold Cup. With Panic Attack also looking to be his horse for the Grand National, can they repeat their winning form shown in the Paddy Power Gold Cup?
Derek Fox: Winning the Grand National is a familiar feeling for Derek Fox, with victories coming in 2017 and 2023. Pairing him up with outsider Myretown for the Gold Cup could prove to be a dangerous surprise package to complete the double.
Harry Cobden: The 2023/24 champion jump jockey has just been announced as J.P. McManus’s retained jockey from May 2026. Though he won’t have begun the role, he will want to prove himself as a worthy choice by winning both the Gold Cup and Grand National for the first time.
