Ivory Coast can tower above rivals
Germany found their stride to hammer minnows Curacao 7-1 in their World Cup opener, but it’s worth remembering that the scores were level at 1-1 in that contest and Das Team did look vulnerable defensively in the early stages.
Florian Wirtz, Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz form a strong German front four, but there isn’t much thought of defence from that quartet and Julian Nagelsmann’s defence may need protecting against Ivory Coast.
Nico Schlotterbeck and Jonathan Tah are not a convincing centre-back partnership and Manuel Neuer is an aged performer in goal.
Ivory Coast were excellent when beating a strong Ecuador side 1-0 in their opening contest in North America and that rates as a top-level performance.
Ecuador had conceded only six goals in their 13 games prior to meeting the Elephants and Emerse Fae’s men were able to have15 shots on goal and created an expected goals figure of 1.52.
Yan Diomande was the star in attack, but Wilfried Singo and Emmanuel Agbadou were also excellent and the Elephants are a strong unit.
It’s understandable that Germany are favourites, but Ivory Coast look overpriced for the win.
Leg 1: Ivory Coast to win @ 4/1
Yan the man can star again
Yan Diomande is a young forward going places and the 19-year-old was the best performer in Ivory Coast’s win over Ecuador.
The RP Leipzig starlet created five chances, made four successful dribbles and had 12 touches in the opposition box.
Germany left-back Nathaniel Brown is a talented young performer himself, but he is more focused on attack than defence and Diomande could get plenty of joy on the right-hand side of Ivory Coast’s attack.
Leg 2: Yan Diomande 1+ shots on target @ 23/20
Pavlovic could be pushed to the limit
Aleksandar Pavlovic wasn’t asked to do a great deal of defensive work in Germany’s opener against Curacao, but the 22-year-old still made three tackles and committed six fouls in a contest in which his side had 65 per cent possession.
Ivory Coast are expected to ask much more of Germany’s defensive protectors in Toronto and Pavlovic is fancied to make at least two successful tackles.
Leg 3: Aleksandar Pavlovic 2+ tackles won @ 3/10
