West Ham Fantasy Football Challenge: Gameweek 27
West Ham United Fans Challenge

Every week this season, two West Ham fans will compete at Fantasy Football to win money for their chosen charities.

Will’s Team

GK: Martinez

DEF: Saliba, Van Dijk, Van Hecke

MID: Rice, De Bruyne, Saka (c), Palmer

FW: Watkins, Alvarez, Haaland

Ticking. Along. Nicely.

That’s exactly what I am doing. Another win over James in the bag. Only six points this time as my 50 beat his 44 but it extends my overall lead on him to 41 points, with me on 1,486 and him on 1,445.

And as you could tell reading his blog post last week, he’s losing the plot. Hasn’t got a clue what to do which is why he just resorts to copying my transfers.

His introduction of Ollie Watkins was one of those which meant my margin of victory was smaller than it would have been, but as he said, he needs to gain ground on me, not just keep up, so I am happy for him to keep following my lead. Mimicry is the highest form of flattery after all. Pretty sure someone said that.

No transfers this week. Keeping a couple in the bag for the double game week next week and frankly my team is in good nick.

Minor tweaks to the starting XI, as Virgil Van Dijk comes back in for Tyrick Mitchell and Cole Palmer replaces Mohammed Kudus despite his assist as West Ham put four past Brentford.

But the biggest one is Bukayo Saka getting the captain’s armband for Arsenal’s trip to Sheffield United. The England man has a staggering seven goals in his last five games and frankly the Blades are awful and have conceded 15 goals in that time.

Bit of a risk taking it off Erling Haaland as unimaginative James will no doubt leave it on him but I am confident it will pay off.

I also beat James in the 10km race we did for Cancer Research at the weekend so it’s loss after loss after loss for the poor lamb at the moment.

Here’s to another one this week.

James’ Team

GK: Raya

DEF: Burn, Gabriel, Cash

MID: Saka (C), De Bruyne, Garnacho, Palmer

FW: Solanke, Haaland (V), Watkins

Once again, I’m wondering where I’m going wrong. Somehow, Will is pulling further and further away from me after another week of him getting more points than me. The gap is now 41 points and, while I’m not particularly worried, it’s still not an ideal spot to be in.

I’m not worried because I still have all three of my chips left to play, while he only has his Bench Boost. That is going to come in handy in the next few weeks, especially the Free Hit chip. I’m convinced most of that 41 gap will be eaten up the week I decide to play that one.

Anyway, my plans for GW27 was to initially roll my free transfer to next week. But I just cannot ignore the form Bukayo Saka is in right now. He’s the reason I’ve fallen so far behind Will, so I need to pull the trigger now or risk it getting worse.

Saka has scored seven goals in his last five games, registering double-figure FPL returns in four of the last five gameweeks. It’s a no brainer. Thankfully I have enough in the bank to bring him in, with Phil Foden making way.

I was also considering Jarrod Bowen, who returned to the goals with a hat-trick against Brentford on Monday night. Now he’s ended his seven game goal drought, I think he’s going to be in such great form for the rest of the season, but that move will have to wait for now. I cannot afford to spend any points on additional transfers while I attempt to close the gap on Will.

Therefore, the rest of my team remains the same for GW27. Apart from my captain. Erling Haaland is back in the goals and I do back him to score against Man United at the Etihad this weekend, but Saka’s Arsenal play Sheffield United this weekend, who have the worst defence in the division right now. I cannot ignore that fact. The most inform attacking player against the worst defence? Surely, there’s a big points haul to be had there…

Just a reminder that Will thinks Fantasy Football is a children’s game, so losing to him really is not an option for me. I have to put him in his place. No excuses.
