Euro 2024: Musiala headlines list of five best players from group stage

Euro 2024 has proven to be a thrilling spectacle for both devoted supporters and neutrals alike. It has showcased spectacular goals, resolute defending, teams battling fiercely, and dramatic efforts to secure results. From last-minute winners to tense defensive battles, the tournament has delivered a full spectrum of football drama.

As we approach the Round of 16, anticipation and excitement are reaching new heights. Numerous teams have left a lasting impression in the group stages, with Austria notably topping their group ahead of teams like France and the Netherlands.

Certain players have also distinguished themselves in the tournament, elevating their performances to propel their teams into the knockout rounds. Looking ahead, let’s explore some of the standout players who have shone brightly at Euro 2024.

Jamal Musiala (Germany)

Jamal Musiala has captivated audiences at Euro 2024 with his mesmerising dribbling and nimble footwork. He made an immediate impact by scoring in Germany’s opening game against Scotland and was rightfully named Man of the Match. His tally of 2 goals places him among the tournament’s leading scorers, alongside his teammate Niclas Füllkrug.

Musiala’s influence has extended beyond goal-scoring; he has consistently posed a significant threat in attack, adeptly manoeuvring past opposition defences and displaying adept ball control in tight spaces. His efficiency in front of goal has also been evident with 2 goals from just 3 shots on target, highlighting an impressive shot conversion rate. For Germany to win Euro 2024 on home soil, Musiala will need to maintain the high standards he’s set for himself and his team.

Fabián Ruiz (Spain)

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabián Ruiz has not only been influential for Spain, but also one of the standout performers of the tournament. Ruiz claimed the Man of the Match accolade for his exceptional performance in Spain’s opening match against Croatia, where he scored a goal and provided an assist. The 28-year-old has also been pivotal in disrupting opposition attacks and winning crucial balls besides his offensive contributions, notably in their 1-0 victory over Italy, a game where La Roja dominated.

Spain’s midfield trio of Ruiz, Rodri, and Pedri epitomises the country’s rich tradition of producing elite midfield talents. With a flawless record in the group stage, Spain have progressed to the Round of 16, and Spanish fans will be expecting Ruiz to maintain his superb form as they aim to extend their perfect run in the tournament.

N’Golo Kanté (France)

N’Golo Kanté left Chelsea for the Saudi League a year ago, joining his French compatriot Karim Benzema at Al-Ittihad. Since then, he has struggled with injuries which have limited his game time and performances in the Middle East. However, upon being named in the France squad for Euro 2024 — after missing out on the UEFA Nations League 2022-23 squad — the 33-year-old has made a triumphant return, looking rejuvenated and playing like the Kanté we all know.

He lived up to the adage “70% of the Earth is covered by water, the rest by Kanté,” making last-ditch tackles and breaking down opponents’ attacks in France’s group stage games. He was a significant reason why France registered clean sheets in both their opening matches against Australia and the Netherlands, winning the Player of the Match award in both fixtures. Although France were held by Poland in their last group game, Kanté impressed again in midfield.

Small yet dynamic, Kanté has now become an indispensable member for Didier Deschamps’ team. Amid the charm, glitter, and elegance of the French team, it’s the hardworking and selfless N’Golo Kanté who makes it all work. For Les Bleus, to reach another Euro final, Kanté must continue performing at this high level.

Christian Eriksen (Denmark)

When life throws challenges at you, tackle them like Christian Eriksen did. Three years ago, on June 16th, during Euro 2020, he suffered a cardiac arrest, and Denmark’s captain, Simon Kjaer, performed CPR to save him. Fast forward to now, Eriksen has played a significant role in Denmark’s journey to the playoffs. As one of the senior leaders in the team, head coach Kasper Hjulmand placed his trust in the veteran, and Eriksen has repaid that faith.

The Manchester United FC midfielder made an immediate impact, scoring in their opening draw against Slovenia and winning the Player of The Match award. Denmark then played out draws with England and Serbia in their subsequent games. Despite only scoring once, Eriksen’s presence in the final third was influential, creating more chances than any other player in the tournament.

Despite his reduced defensive responsibilities in his advanced role, he has not shied away from them, contributing to Denmark conceding just twice in three games. With hosts Germany standing in their way in the Round of 16, Denmark will be relying on midfield maestro Eriksen to neutralise a strong German side and help them advance further in the competition.

Marcel Sabitzer (Austria)

Very few would have predicted Austria to top their group ahead of strong contenders like France and the Netherlands in this tournament. One of the key factors behind their success has been Marcel Sabitzer, who has consistently delivered standout performances. The box-to-box midfielder has been instrumental at both ends of the pitch, maintaining Austria’s efficiency throughout.

Sabitzer clinched a crucial goal in their recent match against the Netherlands, sealing a thrilling comeback win in a five-goal thriller and earning himself the Player of the Match award. This followed his stellar displays in midfield, where Austria limited France and Poland to just one goal each while defeating the latter.

Austrian head coach Ralf Rangnick has shown immense confidence in Sabitzer, who has excelled as a relentless pressing force. Austria have emerged as the surprise dark horses of Euro 2024, showcasing significant potential and resilience in topping their group. As Unsere Burschen look to progress further in the tournament, they will rely on Sabitzer to continue making a decisive impact in key moments.
