Championship football tips: Best bets for Saturday 12 08 23

We pick out four teams to back in the Championship on Saturday.

The Championship moves onto matchday two with a full complement of 12 fixtures taking place on Saturday.

Title favourites Leicester opened up with a hard-fought 2-1 success at home to Coventry last Sunday and they will be aiming to make it two wins from two when they face Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Elsewhere early front-runners Watford host newly promoted Plymouth and unfancied duo Cardiff and QPR do battle in the Welsh capital.

WATFORD V PLYMOUTH (15:00)

Watford have enjoyed a week at the top of the table and can give themselves a good chance of staying there by defeating Plymouth at Vicarage Road.

There were a lot of positive noises coming out of the Watford camp in pre-season and the Hornets delivered on the pitch by winning 4-0 at home to QPR.

Key attackers Joao Pedro and Ismaila Sarr have departed but classy midfielder Imran Louza has stayed and he excelled last weekend with an assist and a superb goal.

Watford were aided by an inept performance from QPR but they are playing with more hunger and intensity under their new head coach Valerien Ismail and could be too hot for Plymouth to handle.

Argyle built on last season’s League One title success with a 3-1 victory at home to Huddersfield which augurs well for their hopes of consolidating their status in the second tier.

However, they are going to have some bad days, especially on their travels, and one of them could occur in Hertfordshire.

Tip: Watford to win {ODDS:1180107902:8/11}

HUDDERSFIELD V LEICESTER (15:00)

Leicester reacquainted themselves with the Championship with a 2-1 success at home to Coventry and they look solid 3/4 shots to follow up by defeating Huddersfield in Yorkshire.

The Foxes experienced some upheaval with the loss of key players Harvey Barnes, James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Jonny Evans but they still have a strong squad capable of competing towards the top of the second tier.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka started on the bench last weekend and Leicester’s firepower must be the envy of Huddersfield manager Neil Warnock, who has struggled with recruitment.

The Terriers suffered a 3-1 loss at newly promoted Plymouth last Saturday and appear likely to succumb to another defeat.

Tip: Huddersfield to win {ODDS:1180104883:100/30}

CARDIFF V QPR (15:00)

QPR’s 4-0 loss at Watford last weekend left them propping up the table and there might not be much of a response from the Londoners when they take on Cardiff in Wales.

Hoops’ manager Gareth Ainsworth did enough to steer them to safety during the final months of last season but he has lost key players this summer with goalkeeper Seny Dieng moving to Middlesbrough and centre-back Rob Dickie joining Bristol City.

Ainsworth snapped up defender Steve Cook from Bournemouth this week but his team could still struggle against Cardiff, who appear to have improved since last term.

The Bluebirds posted an excellent 2-2 draw at Leeds last Sunday and can back that up with a victory.

Tip: Cardiff to win {ODDS:1180104791:10/11}

ROTHERHAM V BLACKBURN (15:00)

Blackburn should be feeling positive after last Saturday’s well-deserved 2-1 victory at home to West Brom and they look tempting 13/10 shots to pass an easier test by defeating Rotherham at the New York Stadium.

Rovers played with lots of pace and movement against Albion and seem to have quickly moved on from the departure of last season’s top scorer Ben Brereton Diaz.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side could be a handful for the Millers, who have questions to answer after their 4-1 defeat at Stoke.

Tip: Blackburn to win {ODDS:1180107728:19/10}
