The Street Art Capitals of the World

From intriguing murals in Paris to vibrant paintings in Montreal, Betway uncovers the best cities in the world for street art.

Street art murals have become popular landmarks in cities all over the world. Whether it’s tourists looking for Instagram-worthy snapshots, or passers-by stopping to take pictures, street art impresses visitors and locals alike with its often intriguing, colourful and thought-provoking designs.

But with so many cities with so many murals, which street art hotspot is the best in the world?

To find out, the team here online casino Betway has analysed 132 cities from around the globe, looking at the following metrics:

●     The number of identified street art murals

●     The number of Instagram posts

●     The number of TikTok posts

●     The number of articles with city and street art mentioned

●     Engagement with articles (likes, comments, and shares)

●     Average yearly Google searches

All of these metrics were used to rank each city, revealing which city is the most popular for street art. They have also looked specifically at the most popular cities in the UK, as well as in the US and Canada.

The world’s street art hotspots

With so many countries providing incredible street art, we uncovered which city is the best of the best across the globe:

1. Paris

Paris is crowned the number one city in the world for street art. From the vibrant streets of Belleville to the quaint neighbourhood of Montmatre, Paris showcases some of the most incredible murals the world has to offer.

Out of all cities analysed, Paris has the highest article engagement, with 471,127 likes, shares or comments over the past five years. Average annual Google searches are also the highest here, amounting to almost 100,000 per year.

France’s capital also has the second highest number of Instagram posts tagged with its relevant hashtag (in this case, #parisstreetart), with 578,413 overall. Plus, the city has 848 TikTok posts tagged with the same hashtag, the second highest number of all locations in the global study.

Paris has produced famous murals like “Chuuuttt!” (“Shush!” in English), painted by French street artist Jef Aéroso. It’s a 22-foot high mural overlooking the Stravinsky Fountain, created to promote accessible contemporary art in the capital. It’s also home to the thought-provoking mural in Belleville, named “Il faut se méfier des mots”, translating to “words must be used with caution”.

2. London

Of all the global cities analysed, London comes in second place for the top street art hotspot. 

Though London ranks in second overall, it beats Paris when it comes to social media hype. The city has the highest number of Instagram posts (591,077), and the highest number of TikTok posts (1,463).

Articles around London’s street art also have the second highest number of social engagements over the past five years (87,423). It ranks third for annual searches, at 43,200, falling behind Paris and Berlin.

Out of the 440 murals recorded in the city alone, some unmissable standouts include the eclectic art lining the walls of Brick Lane, like artist ROA’s “Crane” on Hanbury Street, or the famous Banksy’s “Wallpaper Hanging” beside Regent’s Canal tunnel in Camden.

3. Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia ranks in third place. The city has the highest number of identified street art murals over any city in our global study, amounting to an impressive 2,317. Melbourne ranks third for the most Instagram posts, having received around 356,571, and has 534 TikTok posts, the fifth highest in the list.

Streets like the famous AC/DC Lane, named after the legendary Australian rock band, are filled with a kaleidoscope of street art, including the 3D sculpture of Bon Scott appearing to burst through the wall.

Hosier Lane also acts as street artists’ canvas, with stencils and paste-ups plastered along its walls. It was also home to Banksy’s “Parachuting Rat” stencil, before it was painted over by mistake in 2010.

The UK’s top street art hotspots

The UK is bursting with street art murals. From Aberdeen to Brighton there are notable artists making incredible street art pieces. But, which city comes out as the best?

1. London

Not only does London come in second place for the best street-art city globally, but also comes as number one in the UK.

Brick Lane and Shoreditch are known for being some of the best locations in the capital for viewing street art, allowing you to see a range of stunning artworks in a condensed space.

2. Bristol

The southwestern city of Bristol comes second. With 214 pieces of street art, and the second highest on Instagram 99,536. And the second highest number of articles analysed was 506. It has the highest engagement of all 322,369. And the second highest number of yearly searches.

A standout here is the vibrant mural of Black Lives Matter activist Jen Reid, created by street artist Mr Cenz, plus Banksy’s “Mild Mild West” on Stokes Croft.

3. Belfast

Northern Ireland’s capital comes in third place. 340 pieces of street art, the second highest of all cities behind London. Third highest number of yearly searches at 10,560.

Belfast features some of the most detailed street art in the UK, including the 3D mural “Disruption” on Kent Street, or the freehand paste-up titled “Blurry Eyed” on Talbot Street.

The top street art hotspots in America

Both Canada and the US have some truly astounding street art. But which city comes out as the best in each country?

United States

1. Los Angeles

Los Angeles comes in at number one for street art in the US. The city has the most street art murals of all, at a massive 2,272 in the city. It also has the most Instagram posts of all cities in the US, with 222,486, as well as the highest number of article-mentions (536).

Los Angeles is home to perhaps some of the most creative and colourful street art in the country.  “Blue For You”, painted by D*Face is a prime example of the sheer talent in the city, as well as “A Mosaic of Peace and Justice”. 

2. Chicago

Chicago comes next as the second most popular street art hotspot in the US, with the second most Instagram posts (175,165) and the highest number of TikTok posts (447). It also has the second most engagement with online articles (60,510).

“From Doom to Bloom” by Collin van der Sluijs is an unmissable street-art mural, portraying two indigenous Illinois birds amongst a backdrop of flowers.

3. New York City

New York comes in third, second highest number of murals 1,098, third highest number of Instagram posts 86,845. It has the second most articles analysed (388) and the most annual searches (28,800).

“Ziggy Stardust”, by Kobra, depicting the famous image of David Bowie in Jersey City, and “Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera” in Brooklyn are standouts in the city.

Canada

We’ve also analysed 10 Canadian cities to reveal the most popular locations for street art. Montreal rules the street art scene. The city has the highest number of street art murals, with 295 overall, as well as the most tagged posts on Instagram using “#montrealstreetart” (129,703). Articles on Montreal street art have around 11,262 social engagements, plus, the term “Montreal street art” is searched an average of 12,000 Google times every year.

Vancouver is next, with 135 murals, the second most behind Montreal. The city also comes second for the most Instagram posts (18,886), the second highest number of articles (114), and comes second for average yearly searches (3,120).

Hamilton rounds off the top three for Canada, with only 18 recorded murals overall. “Hamilton street art” is mentioned in 88 articles, which received 8,381 likes, shares or comments, the second highest number for this metric.

●     Engagement with articles (likes, comments, and shares) over the past 5 years. “[City] street art” searched for and a filter of 5 years applied.

●     Average yearly Google searches – Google Keyword Planner.

All metrics were considered to rank each city, revealing which city is the most popular for street art. Data correct as of 05/03/24.
