Fit for a King: The Most Popular British Recipes in Every State This Year

With the King of the United Kingdom’s coronation just around the corner, people all over USA are busy getting into the British spirit.

Surprisingly, most Americans have turned away from the classic fish and chips and instead opted for some popular home comforts such as Roast Lamb and Ploughman’s lunches.

It’s estimated that almost 700,000 Brits make their home here in the US, and although some traditional classics rank high in some states, it appears many residents are opting for wholesome, homecooked meals, as opposed to popular takeaway items. Searches for “toad in the hole recipes” have seen a 3,306 per cent increase, while steak and ale pie searches have gone up by 1,132 per cent ahead of King Charles’ coronation.

But how do these searches vary by state?

Online slots site Betway has scoured Google Keyword Planner data over the past year to determine which British recipe each state has a growing appetite for.

Home is where the heart is

Food is at the heart of every British household and it appears many US states agree. The recipe for toad in the hole was the most popular for Americans in the run-up to the coronation, with the British dish the most searched for in nine states.

Sweet treats on the rise

Gypsy tarts and banoffee pies also soared in popularity over the past year, with the latter seeing an increase in searches of nearly 300 per cent in West Virginia alone. As the coronation of King Charles nears, perhaps Americans are opting to satisfy their sweet tooth to celebrate.

British classics increased in popularity, but not favored by state

When you think of British food, your mind goes to fish and chips or beans on toast. The latter is a fairly new phenomenon for Americans, but both classic recipes continue to soar in the US. Fish and chips searches have grown by 2,364 per cent at a national level and beans on toast has increased by 2,229 per cent.

Expert nutritionist at Natural Health NI, Sal Hanvey, commented on the research:

“It’s really pleasing to see there is a switch to recipes that are traditionally homecooked, as opposed to the UK takeaway favourites of fish and chips and chicken tikka masala.

“Many takeaway dishes tend to be very high in salt and saturated fats, and as delicious as the dishes might be, they’re rarely nutritionally beneficial to us. Opting for homecooked meals will give you greater control over what exactly you’re eating, from having the option of getting some extra veggies into your dish, to avoiding all the bad stuff that can come with certain foods.

“Indulging in some home-cooked grub is the perfect way to join in with family and friends from across the pond in celebrating the King’s coronation and will surely bring that little bit of home to the states.”

Methodology

Betway analyzed Google Keyword Planner data from the US over the course of a year, to determine which British recipes have had the biggest change in searches, to reveal the most popular British recipes in the run-up to the coronation. Data is up to date as of April 2023.
