10. Joleon Lescott – 23 Premier League goals
Joleon Lescott was one of the most productive goalscoring centre-backs of the Premier League era, combining defensive solidity with a real threat from set-pieces throughout his career at the likes of Wolves, Everton and Manchester City.
The former England international was particularly dangerous in the air, knocking in no less than eight goals for Everton during the 2007/2008 league season, before bringing the same habit to the Etihad Stadium. Lescott scored six goals during Manchester City’s title-winning campaigns in the early 2010s as the club ended their long wait for league glory. Less memorable spells at West Brom, Aston Villa and Sunderland followed before he retired with a grand total of 23 goals.
9. Antonio Valencia – 24 Premier League goals
Antonio Valencia is better remembered as one of the most reliable right-backs of his generation, but his contribution in front of goal also earns him a place among the most goals scored by defenders in Premier League history. The Ecuador international began his career at Wigan Athletic before making his mark at Manchester United, where he transformed from a winger into a marauding full-back.
Valencia’s willingness to get into the box under five different United managers yielded 17 Premier League goals, reflecting the attacking intent he brought to every game. While he was never a conventional goalscorer, his timing in the final third made him a threat, long after his days as a winger.
8. William Gallas – 25 Premier League goals
Frenchman William Gallas was one of the most elegant defenders to grace the Premier League, and his 25 goals across spells at Chelsea (12 goals), Arsenal (12 goals) and Tottenham Hotspur (one goal) mark him out as one of the most complete centre-backs of his era.
Many of Gallas’s goals came from set-pieces, where his timing and aerial ability made him a genuine threat at corners and free-kicks. He also, however, possessed the confidence to drive forward and contribute in open play, a rarity for defenders of his generation.
7. Marcos Alonso – 26 Premier League goals
Marcos Alonso redefined what a modern wing-back could offer in the Premier League during his time at Chelsea, bringing a consistent attacking threat that made him one of the division’s most dangerous defenders.
The Spain international was deployed by Antonio Conte in a system that allowed him to advance freely, and he took full advantage, scoring from long range, from set-pieces and with well-timed runs into the box. Six of Alonso’s 26 Premier League goals arrived at defining moments in Chelsea’s 2016/2017 triumph, with seven more arriving the following season.
6. Ian Harte – 28 Premier League goals
Ian Harte was unlike most defenders of his generation because so many of his goals came from direct free-kicks and penalties. The Leeds United left-back possessed one of the fiercest left feet in Premier League history and regularly stepped up for dead-ball situations.
Most notably, Harte scored spectacular long-range efforts and became one of Leeds’ most reliable set-piece specialists during the club’s successful early-2000s period. The Irishman bagged six Premier League goals in the 1999/2000 season, and he went one better in the next campaign by getting on the scoresheet seven times in what would be his most prolific ever season.
5. Gary Cahill – 28 Premier League goals
Gary Cahill combined traditional centre-back defending with a consistent eye for goal throughout his Premier League career. Even before joining Chelsea, Cahill made a name for himself by scoring a staggering 13 times for Bolton Wanderers, often arriving late into the box to meet crosses with perfectly timed headers or instinctive finishes.
Cahill would go on to impress further at Stamford Bridge at both ends of the pitch. He scored 13 leagues goals for Chelsea in total, chipping in six times in their iconic title-winning season of 2016/2017 – his best ever Premier League return and perhaps his best ever Premier League season in general. His most fondly remembered goal of all, however, might be his 2012 volley against fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
4. Virgil van Dijk – 31 Premier League goals
One of the best Premier League defenders of all time, Virgil van Dijk has become synonymous with composure, dominance and leadership. But the Dutchman is also one of the most dangerous centre-backs in Premier League history from attacking set-pieces, as shown by his 27 goals for Liverpool and previous four strikes for Southampton.
His contribution to Liverpool’s title-chasing era under Jurgen Klopp extended well beyond defensive organisation as his presence at set-pieces gave that famous side a genuine formidable threat that opponents feared and ultimately struggled to contain. Among the highest scoring Premier League defenders, Van Dijk remains an active force under Arne Slot and could yet climb even higher up the rankings.
3. Leighton Baines – 32 Premier League goals
The electric Leighton Baines is another player who redefined the role of Premier League fullbacks. Perhaps he is best known for his relentless runs forward and incredible dead-ball delivery, but Baines’s attacking spirit also saw him score a considerable number of penalties and free-kicks during his Everton career.
His calmness and technique was unique, with his technical ability producing five goals in three different Premier League seasons between 2010 and 2014. Arguably the best of them was his venomous long-range free-kick versus Newcastle in 2013.
2. David Unsworth – 38 Premier League goals
Another Everton icon on this list is David Unsworth, a player whose goals largely came from the penalty spot. Nicknamed “Rhino,” the Toffees defender was remarkably composed from 12 yards and often entrusted with penalty duties despite playing in defence – trust which was repaid an impressive 22 times.
Unsworth’s total of 38 goals spanned across four clubs – Everton, West Ham, Portsmouth and Wigan – but he is most synonymous with Everton where he had his best seasons, including the 1999/2000 campaign when he registered six goals for the football club.
1. John Terry – 41 Premier League goals
John Terry stands as not just one of the best Premier League players of all time, but also the highest scoring defender in Premier League history. The legendary Chelsea captain scored 41 league goals, with the vast majority arriving from powerful headers during corners and free-kick situations.
Unlike others on this list, there were few long-range rockets or penalty duties to pad the numbers here. Instead, it was sheer aggression and intelligence which helped the Chelsea hero separate himself from the rest and emerge as a crucial player under legendary managers like Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte.
Final thoughts
The Premier League has seen countless brilliant defenders over the years, but only a select few have consistently delivered goals alongside defensive excellence. From John Terry’s dominance in the air to Leighton Baines’ delightful free-kicks and penalties, these players prove defenders can influence matches at both ends of the pitch
As tactics continue to evolve and modern defenders become increasingly attack-minded, it will be fascinating to see whether anyone can challenge Terry’s record for most goals by a defender in Premier League history. With Virgil van Dijk still active and a new generation of attacking full-backs coming through, the top scoring defenders Premier League fans have come to love may yet have company at the summit.
