Premier League Team of the Week: Gameweek 38
Premier League Team of the Week

The curtain came down on the Premier League season on Sunday with Arsenal crowned champions at Crystal Palace and Wolves, Burnley and West Ham relegated to the Championship.

It was a strong campaign for Aston Villa, Sunderland, Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton, while Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham have plenty of work to do this summer.

Here is our team of the week for Gameweek 38.

Goalkeeper – Mads Hermansen (West Ham)

Mads Hermansen was one of only four Premier League keepers to keep a clean sheet in the final week of the campaign. West Ham were relegated to the Championship, but the Irons didn’t go down without a fight when beating Leeds 3-0 in East London.

The Danish stopper made a couple of excellent saves and gave his side hope.

Defender – Issa Diop (Fulham)

Fulham signed off with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Craven Cottage, with centre-back Issa Diop keeping a clean sheet and opening the scoring when heading home to unlock the Magpies’ defence.

A strong performance at each end of the pitch from the Moroccan international to provide Fulham with a home win in their final contest of the Premier League campaign.

Defender – Pedro Porro (Tottenham)

Tottenham needed a huge performance to hold off relegation against Everton and Pedro Porro was Spurs’ standout defender.

The Spanish full-back won seven ground duels, had 11 defensive contributions and created three chances for his attacking teammates. All of which came under maximum pressure with Spurs battling for their Premier League future.

Defender – Curtis Jones (Liverpool)

Better known as a midfielder, Curtis Jones filled in at right-back for Liverpool in their 1-1 draw with Brentford and the 25-year-old produced an excellent display.

Jones grabbed Liverpool’s only goal of the game; he had the most touches of any player at Anfield and completed 91 per cent of his pass attempts.

Defender – Ian Maatsen (Aston Villa)

Another excellent performance from Aston Villa when winning 2-1 at Manchester City and a top-level effort from full-back Ian Maatsen.

The Dutchman made 14 defensive contributions against a fearsome City attack and 91 per cent of his passing efforts were successful.

Midfielder – Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)

Bruno Fernandes set a new Premier League assist record in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Brighton and the United captain also got on the scoresheet.

The Portuguese star laid on Patrick Dorgu’s opening goal on the south coast and it was a fitting performance from the Premier League player of the year.

Midfielder – Patrick Dorgu (Man Utd)

A goal and assist for Patrick Dorgu, who operated on the left-hand side of Manchester United’s midfield in their 3-0 south coast success against Brighton.

The Dane was a constant threat to the Seagulls’ defence and he crashed home a Bruno Fernandes corner to give United a 1-0 advantage in a tough fixture.

Midfielder – Noni Madueke (Arsenal)

Noni Madueke celebrated his call-up to the England World Cup squad by finding the net, creating three chances, recording the most touches (13) in the opposition box and hitting four shots at the Crystal Palace goal.

The 24-year-old hasn’t always been a first-choice forward for Arsenal this season, but his efforts in the 2-1 Selhurst Park success over Crystal Palace will only strengthen his claims to land a regular starting role.

Midfielder – Joao Palhinha (Tottenham)

Scored a goal to keep Tottenham in the Premier League, but that wasn’t where Joao Palhinha’s contributions ended.

The Portuguese international took the most shots, had the most defensive contributions and the most touches in a complete midfield performance.

It was a crucial fixture for Spurs, with their place in the Premier League on the line, and Palhinha refused to shy away from the pressure.

Forward – Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Ollie Watkins hit a brace of goals in a tough fixture at the Etihad to make it six goals in his last five appearances for Aston Villa.

The England striker was too much for Manchester City to handle and the effort in the final game of the domestic campaign tees up Watkins nicely for a big summer at the World Cup.

Forward – Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)

Jarrod Bowen was once again West Ham’s standout performer, providing an assist for Taty Castellanos before finding the net himself.

The 3-0 victory over Leeds wasn’t enough to save the Hammers, but Bowen certainly gave it his best shot in their final Premier League contest.
