BACK TO WIN
Xander Schauffele
Seven of the last 10 US Opens have been won by first-time major champions, and Schauffele looks poised to continue that trend by making his breakthrough at Torrey Pines this week.
The 27-year-old has played in the US Open four times in his career and has never finished outside the top six, with a T3 in 2019 his best result to date.
Schauffele has been extremely consistent not just at the US Open, but at the other majors, too. He already has six top-five major finishes in just 16 starts in his young career, and it’s only a matter of time until he earns his first win in one of these events.
Torrey Pines looks an ideal place to do just that. A San Diego native, Schauffele shook off some poor form at this course to finish second at the Farmers Insurance Open here in January.
EACH-WAY SHOUTS
Patrick Reed
Reed led last year’s US Open at the halfway point, but ultimately finished T13 after shooting 77-74 over the weekend.
Nevertheless, the 30-year-old now has 10 top-20 finishes in majors since 2017 including six top-10s, one of which was his victory at the 2018 Masters.
Reed is a consistent performer in the majors and is rarely affected by pressure, and he won the Farmers Insurance by an impressive five shots at Torrey Pines in January.
With three top-10s in his last six starts, Reed’s in good form, too, and can continue a run of Americans winning 12 of the last 13 majors on US soil.
Louis Oosthuizen
Oosthuizen finished T2 at the PGA Championship last month, meaning the South African now has six top-three finishes in majors since he won the Open back in 2010.
He hasn’t won an event since 2018 and has never won in America, but Oosthuizen has proven himself as a big-game player who raises his game for the most prestigious events, and he’s just a few shots away from being a three- or four-time major champion.
Oosthuizen has now finished T33 or better in seven consecutive majors, a run that includes two top-threes and a T7, and he’s finished inside the top 25 in six straight US Opens.
Having gone 2-T8-T2-T18 in his last four starts, the 38-year-old comes into this week in strong form and it’d be no surprise to see him in contention once again.
OUTSIDE SHOT
Jason Kokrak
Kokrak is in fine form as he heads to Torrey Pines, having won the Charles Schwab Challenge in his last start at the end of May.
The 36-year-old now has two wins in the last seven months as he also triumphed at the CJ Cup in October, and he’s also picked up three more top-10 finishes in his last eight starts.
Kokrak’s best major finish to date is his T17 at this event last year, but he’s playing better than most on the PGA Tour at the moment and has a decent record at Torrey Pines.
He finished in the top 30 in four of his last five starts at the Farmers Insurance Open, albeit without really contending.
