Pennetta to execute Italian job on compatriot Vinci

In the women's final that nobody expected, the unfancied Fed Cup team-mates will face each other for the US Open title

By defeating Serena Williams in the semi-finals and ending the world No. 1’s hopes of a first calendar year Grand Slam, Roberta Vinci caused one of the greatest sporting shocks of recent memory.

But lightning is unlikely to strike twice for the Italian.

The 32-year-old’s opponent in the final, compatriot Flavia Pennetta, starts as 4/11 favourite to claim her first major.

Despite the short price, there is plenty of value in the 26th seed.

While Pennetta was not required to overcome Williams, the way she navgated an otherwise challenging route illustrates her excellent credentials, securing impressive victories over former champion Sam Stosur, fifth seed Petra Kvitova and second seed Simona Halep.

Pennetta is at home in New York, reaching the quarters in 2008, semis in 2013 and the doubles final a year ago.

This is both players’ first singles Slam final and this experience and familiarity can be decisive for Pennetta, who also leads the pair’s head-to-head record.

The 33-year-old has won five of nine matches against her Fed Cup team-mate, including three of the last four.

Interestingly, the last six matches between the duo have ended in straight sets and Pennetta is evens to win by a 2-0 margin on Saturday.

In her post-match debrief, Williams commented on Vinci’s “once-in-a-lifetime performance”.

Certainly, the emotional energy expended by Vinci should not be underestimated.

The 5ft 5in competitor may struggle for energy, so backing Pennetta with a -3.5 handicap at 8/11 looks an intriguing punt, especially as she has comfortably covered this in three of the last four meetings.

Those seeking bigger prices should also look at Pennetta taking the first set by a 6-1 score-line.

The 5ft 8in finalist has already inflicted this score on her opponents four times this tournament.

She has also won three of the last four sets against Vinci by a 6-1 score, and her odds of 9/1 to do so again represent stellar value.
