Only three players can stop Serena from achieving Grand Slam history

As the world No. 1 chases a seventh US Open and 22nd major title, her fellow semi-finalists are all attempting to make their maiden breakthrough

Serena Williams v Roberta Vinci

Williams is two matches away from achieving a calendar Grand Slam for the first time after defeating her sister Venus in three sets in the quarter-finals.

The 32-year-old is unlikely to expend anywhere near the same amount of emotional energy against the unseeded Vinci in the semis.

The Italian – who is only a year younger than her opponent – is in new territory, reaching the last four of a Slam for the first time in what is her 44th attempt.

Vinci does not have the game – or power – to compete with the world No. 1.

She is 5ft 5in and one of the few female players to have a one-handed backhand, while one of her favoured shots is the slice, which Williams will relish.

The only person the 21-time major winner, who defeated Vinci in straight sets at the Rogers Cup in Toronto last month, can lose to is herself.

That is not going to happen.

Flavia Pennetta v Simona Halep

An intriguing – and less predictable – encounter between the world No. 2 Halep and the 26th seed Pennetta.

Both reached the semis after winning three-set quarters against Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova respectively.

The Romanian Halep is bidding to reach the second Slam final of her career after the 2014 French Open, while Pennetta joining compatriot Vinci at this stage means two Italian women have made the last four of a major for the first time in the Open era.

The 33-year-old Pennetta excels at Flushing Meadows, advancing to the last eight or beyond in six of her last seven visits, and leads her 23-year-old opponent 3-1 in their head-to-head series.

But Halep won their only meeting of 2015 at the Miami Open in March.

That victory – which, like this tournament, is played on hard courts – could be significant.

Halep has won three of her 11 WTA singles titles this year and is poised to make it through to the final two.
