No danger for phenom Federer against Gasquet

The in-form Frenchman will be unable to trouble the 17-time Grand Slam winner, who is closing in on his sixth US Open title and first since 2008

Roger Federer achieved another first in his illustrious career during his immaculate US Open fourth-round victory against John Isner on Monday.

He won the opening tie-break 7-0 – the first time the 6ft-10in, huge-serving American has failed to register a single point in 448 end-of-set deciders.

While minor compared to his myriad of other honours, it is nevertheless a remarkable statistic that infers that, at the age of 34, Federer might actually be getting better.

That is ominous for Richard Gasquet, then, who faces the Swiss master in the quarter-finals of the season’s final major on Wednesday.

6/4 – Roger Federer to beat Richard Gasquet in straight sets

So long a player of vastly unfulfilled potential, Gasquet is producing the best – and most consistent – tennis of his career.

The 29-year-old reached the semis of Wimbledon in July and has form in New York, too, winning the junior title in 2002 and progressing to the last-four stage in 2013.

But there will only be one winner in the battle of the single-handed backhands.

That will be Federer, who makes his 46th appearance in the last eight of a Grand Slam.

Five of his 17 major titles have been at Flushing Meadows and he looks as likely as anyone – including Novak Djokovic – to triumph this year.

19/1- Roger Federer to win the US Open

Federer has not dropped a set during this tournament and it would be a surprise if that did not continue against Gasquet.

The world No. 2 has won 14 successive sets against the Frenchman – most notably when clinching the Davis Cup for Switzerland last November.

Gasquet has only beaten Federer twice in 16 meetings – at the 2005 Monte Carlo Masters and 2011 Rome Masters respectively.

But those results on clay will have no significance on a contest which will be played on the fast acrylic DecoTurf surface.

5/4 – Under 32.5 games between Richard Gasquet and Roger Federer

Federer has never served better at any point in his career – he did not drop serve against Isner – and has won 20 of the 21 Grand Slam quarter-finals he has played on hard courts.

That number will become 22 against Gasquet. And comfortably so.
