Sarah Stirk: Rory seems relaxed and confident

Our golf expert's take after Day 1 of the Player's Championship

Sawgrass is such a great test of golf. As Jim Furyk put it, you never feel comfortable around here.

It really challenges every facet of a player’s game and is arguably the most complete test in the sport.

Conditions have made things even more tricky on the opening day, with the wind swirling it’s been difficult out there.

Rory McIlroy, who despite shooting an impressive opening 69 described the course as ‘frustrating’.

With the day’s best score being Kevin Na’s 67 though, the Northern Irishman is still very much in the mix.

Rory said to me yesterday it’s important he doesn’t over do practice in between rounds and tournaments.

He has friends staying with him and he was just going to play some football on the beach after his opening round.

He seems relaxed and confident, and I like his chances of being there or thereabouts on the final day.

In my pre-tournament preview here, I picked out Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk and Marc Leishman as contenders for the trophy.

With all three shooting under par, I liked their starts and I’m hoping they can continue that as we head into the weekend.

A lot of talk around here surrounds the body language of Tiger Woods.

He clearly has some personal issues having just split up with his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn but he doesn’t look entirely comfortable and yesterday’s round was a mixture of the good and bad.
