Sarah Stirk: It’s all set up for a fascinating finish to the Open

Could Jordan Spieth seal an unprecedented third-straight major victory?

An amazing leaderboard heading into the final day. It might have been a stop-start, weather affected few days but it’s poised beautifully heading into what will be only the second Monday finish in the tournament’s 155 year history.

Sunday saw some spectacular scoring and has really made for a fascinating conclusion. At the start of play their are still about 27 names who have a realistic chance of ending the day with the Claret Jug in their hands.

I must admit, I didn’t think Jordan Spieth would win again this week but it’s amazing what he continues to do. He took 37 putts in round 2 and was appalled by his performance on the greens. But he figured something out and recorded just 27 in round three to put himself in a great position. He could well go on and claim his third straight Major, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. He is a special talent with an incredible maturity for his age.

5/2 – Jordan Spieth to win the Open Championship

I was surprised however by Dustin Johnson, who is Spieth’s opposite when comparing mental strength. His weekend scoring in majors is poor and his round 3 75 has seem him fall into T20th position from the lead after day 2.

At -7 he is not yet out of the equation but I do question whether he’ll be able to produce something special in today’s final round.

As for my pre-tournament picks, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and of course, joint-leader Louis Oosthuizen are in with a shout. The South African in particular has been in fantastic form over the three days and we know how much he loves St Andrews.

Spieth may be the 5/2 favourite to go on and win it but there’s still great value to be had in backing Oostuizen to secure a second Open title at 7/2.

7/2 – Louis Oosthuizen to win the Open Championship
