Sarah Stirk: I’m so pleased for major winner Jason Day

The Sky Sports Golf presenter and analyst reflects on a remarkable week at the US PGA Championship

New US PGA Championship winner Jason Day played sensational golf throughout and I’m so pleased he picked up the first major of his career.

The most impressive stat for me was that he holed 60 out of 62 putts inside 10 feet during the week. That’s outstanding.

It was his time and he believed it was. The confidence he exuded was fun to watch.

Jason’s story is heart-warming. He lost his dad when he was 12 and if he hadn’t found golf, his future looked bleak.

The Australian’s caddie, Col Swatton, is also his coach, mentor and father figure and has played a huge part in Jason’s success.

I interviewed Jason three times on Sunday: pre-round, post-round and then a sit-down interview with him later on in the evening.

He is such a good guy and genuinely warm and engaging. He is well liked by his peers and his victory was a popular one.

I was very pleased with my picks, having tipped Jason, Justin Rose, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Nick Watney and Jimmy Walker before the tournament at Whistling Straits started.

Justin and Brooks – who is 14/1 favourite to win the Wyndham Championship this week – claimed top-five finishes, while Rickie and Watney tied for 30th.

The only big disappointment was Walker, who missed the cut.

The majors this year have been superb and the sport is in great shape right now.

Having Jason and Rickie alongside Rory MicIlroy and Jordan Spieth is brilliant for the game.

They are all engaging personalities, but also great guys, too. There is still plenty to play for this year.

The FedExCup Playoffs start at The Barclays next week and the European Tour’s Final Series gets under way in October.

Bring it on.
