Players Championship: Can Rory make it two tournament victories on the bounce?

With bags of confidence and hitting form at just the right time, it is hard to see how anyone can topple the world number one this weekend.

Often labeled as the fifth major of the golfing calendar, our focus switches to the Players Championship this week, as the sports elite head to TPC Sawgrass. This event is one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year, and will likely attract just as much attention this time around, with such a world class field on display.

The tournament favourite has to be Rory McIlroy. Despite an extremely competitive field, the world number one enters the event full of confidence and unquestionably the man to beat. He has been in exceptional form of late, capping an impressive month with a win at the WGC Cadillac Matchplay last weekend. This tournament victory came after an impressive final two rounds in the Masters, where he finished fourth and played some sensational golf in the process.

Although McIlroy may appear to be a bit of a safe bet, it is hard to see how anyone in the field can match him in terms of current form and stature. He has also finished in the top ten in his last two appearances in the event, reassuring any potential doubters that he has a great claim for winning this tournament.

If the Northern Irishman plays to his potential again this weekend, then he is in with a great chance of claiming his first Players Championship.

Rory McIlroy to storm to victory is priced at 4/1.

If you are looking for a player who arguably has just as much potential at this tournament, but offers longer odds, than Jim Furyk could well be your man.

The American finished as runner-up in last year´s event, narrowly losing out to Martin Kaymer. He also managed to finally end his long over due wait for a victory in the RBC Heritage a few weeks ago, meaning he is full of confidence, having reinstated himself in the winners´circle.

Not only has he won a tournament recently, he also performed brilliantly in last week´s World Matchplay, finishing an impressive fourth place.

So all in all, Jim Furyk looks to be in with a great shout of claiming his first Players Championship this weekend and maintaining his impressive recent form.

Jim Furyk to claim victory at TPC Sawgrass is priced at 18/1.
