Who is leading the Golden Boot race?
While there’s still time for a surprise, here are the players currently leading the chase for the World Cup Golden Boot award:
Kylian Mbappe
Mbappe won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup and is yet again among the favourites this time around, having bagged seven goals in France’s five matches so far. The Real Madrid superstar boasts an incredible scoring record for France and has a huge chance of winning the Golden Boot for the second time if Les Bleus reach the final again.
Lionel Messi
Messi has been on fire in what will be his final World Cup. The Argentine living legend kicked off his tournament with a hat-trick against Algeria, and has since added to his tally with a total of seven goals so far – level with Mbappe. With Argentina’s route to the World Cup final looking relatively risk-free, this looks to be a great chance for Messi to win the Golden Boot.
Erling Haaland
Haaland has been unstoppable at this World Cup so far, as he sits joint-top of the scoring charts with seven goals to date. Norway have been one of the tournament’s biggest surprise packages, thanks largely to their talismanic striker’s performances. He scored twice in their most recent win over Brazil, and England are next in his crosshairs as Norway target a semi-final spot.
Harry Kane
Coming off the back of a phenomenal season for Bayern Munich, Kane has been in red-hot form once again at the World Cup and looks to add a second Golden Boot to his growing trophy cabinet. Kane has overtaken Gary Lineker to become England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, and will hope to open up a gap as the Three Lions seek their first World Cup win since their 1966 triumph.
