The 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championships get underway in Switzerland this week, with England aiming to retain the trophy they won on home soil in 2022.
Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman is aiming to win the Euros for the third successive time, having lifted the trophy with her native Netherlands in 2017.
However, Wiegman has experienced a string of setbacks in the lead-up to the Euros with goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby both retiring and defender Millie Bright making herself unavailable for selection.
The Lionesses are hoping to make amends for their loss in the World Cup final two years ago, but they could once again come up short in a potential rematch with Spain in the semis.

Spain hard to ignore in Switzerland
World champions Spain have been handed a tricky group in Switzerland alongside Portugal, Belgium and Italy and their build-up hasn’t gone exactly to play, with Aitana Bonmati hospitalised on the eve of the tournament due to viral meningitis.
Bonmati was discharged over the weekend and is expected to return to the squad ahead of the tournament, although she will likely miss the opening against Portugal on Thursday.
Even without Bonmati, Spain should be able to start off with a victory given how strong their squad is and a deep Euros run is expected from the 2023 World Cup winners.
La Roja have been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the previous three Euros, including an extra-time defeat to England in 2022, but their World Cup success have raised expectations and failure to get past the last-eight stage would be a disaster.
While the group features a couple of threats, Spain should finish top and give themselves a favourable clash with the runners-up in a weaker Group A. They should have the quality to take out England or France in the semis, putting them on course for a first-ever European title.

Sweden to enjoy deep run
While Group D pair England and France are seen as Spain’s big rivals, Sweden could spring a surprise and they head into the tournament on a 12-game unbeaten run.
The Swedes have some impressive tournament pedigree as well, having finished third at three of the previous four World Cups and made the semis at the Euros in three of the last five editions, including the 2022 edition.
Sweden meet Germany in Group C, who ended 2024 in shaky form with losses to Australia and Italy and failed to make it out of the group at the 2023 World Cup.
Sweden face Germany in their final group game, which puts them in a strong position to take charge of the group. That puts them on the weaker side of the bracket, against the Group D runner-up and the winners of Group A.
The tournament could very quickly begin to open up for this consistent Sweden side, so 14/1 looks like a huge price.
