Manchester United and Chelsea are Premier League giants and they have served up some memorable meetings over the years.
Chelsea hold title-winning aspirations this season, while Manchester United will be hoping to improve on their dismal showing in 2024/25.
The Premier League giants are due to meet at Old Trafford later this month, with Chelsea the favourites in the Premier League betting. Here we have ranked the top 10 matches between the two former top-flight champions.
10. Chelsea 5-4 Manchester United – October 2012
Let’s start with the fourth-round EFL Cup nine-goal thriller in 2012. This Stamford Bridge clash included nine goals, three penalties, nine yellow cards and three strikes in extra-time – a truly bonkers cup tie.
David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard, Daniel Sturridge, Ramires, Ryan Giggs (twice), Javier Hernandez and Nani got the goals in what was a memorable tie.
9. Chelsea 3-5 Manchester United – January 1998
Roll the clock back further, to an incredible third-round FA Cup tie at Stamford Bridge in early 1998.
It was Arsenal who collected the Premier League and FA Cup double in the 1997-98 campaign, but David Beckham (two), Andy Cole (two) and Teddy Sheringham got on the scoresheet for Manchester United in a high-scoring 5-3 win in west London.
8. Chelsea 4-3 Manchester United – April 2024
More recently, Chelsea downed Manchester United 4-3 at Stamford Bridge in April 2024 thanks in part to a hat-trick from Cole Palmer. It was a significant result for the Blues, who recorded their first victory in 13 league matches against United.
Chelsea snapped that poor sequence of results against the Red Devils and it came in entertaining fashion.
7. Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United – May 2018
Chelsea and Manchester United met in the final of the 2018 FA Cup and, while it was a low-key clash settled by Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty, it was a significant contest.
It was the third meeting between the Blues and United in the finale of the oldest club competition, but the first to take place at the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium.
6. Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea – April 2011
Javier Hernandez and Park Ji-Sung gave Manchester United a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the second-leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.
The Red Devils progressed to the final, where they were beaten by a brilliant Barcelona side at Wembley.
5. Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (Utd won 6-5 on pens) – May 2018
Manchester United and Chelsea met in the first all-English Champions League final at a rain-soaked Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
The Red Devils had edged Chelsea by two points in a thrilling Premier League title race and Sir Alex Ferguson’s men again narrowly denied the Blues when winning the final 6-5 in a penalty shootout.
4. Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United – October 2016
Chelsea collected the Premier League title at the end of the 2016/17 Premier League season and October’s 4-0 win over United at the Bridge was a significant result.
Jose Mourinho, who enjoyed so much success with the Blues in west London, returned to Stamford Bridge in the opposing dugout and the United boss was duly dismissed by his former club.
3. Chelsea 3-1 Manchester United – July 2020
An error-strewn performance from Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea gave the Blues a clear passage to the FA Cup final.
The calamity cat failed to keep out Olivier Giroud’s flick, before fumbling Mason Mount’s tame effort and the semi-final was handed to the Blues.
2. Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea – May 2023
Goals from Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford handed Manchester United a 4-1 victory over Chelsea and it booked the Red Devils a place in the following season’s Champions League.
The Blues could manage only a 12th-place finish in a poor campaign.
1. Chelsea 2-3 Manchester United – October 2012
This was an all-action Premier League contest which featured goals from Juan Mata, Ramires, Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and an own goal from David Luiz.
The clash also saw red cards for Blues pair Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres in what was both a high-scoring and ill-tempered contest.
