France’s unbeaten attack led by Kylian Mbappé shapes the betting outlook for today’s semifinal against Spain
If Spain has a whiff of a chance to upset France this afternoon in the World Cup semi-finals, a lot of that will rest on the shoulders of a young man who just turned 19.
Lamine Yamal is Spain’s biggest game-breaker, their player most capable of personal brilliance when a game is tight.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente spoke yesterday about telling the young Yamal to enjoy the moment today and not get overwhelmed by the pressure.
Yamal came into the tournament with a hamstring issue, which has held him back somewhat. He has just the one goal so far, in six appearances. However, he was named player of the match in Spain’s 2-1 quarterfinal win over Belgium.
In his recently completed club season, Yamal had 16 goals and 11 assists in La Liga, a league-leading 11 assists, and was the 2025-26 La Liga Player of the Season.
“I’ve told him there is no need to worry – let him enjoy himself,” the coach said, per Reuters. “I’m sure Lamine’s great World Cup day is still to come. I hope it’s [today] and, if not, then in the final, if we can get there.”
Nice bit of coaching there, because the pressure is on Yamal, going up against an impressive French team. If Spain has a chance of overcoming that French attacking line and its sheer offensive brilliance, they are going to need the personal brilliance of Yamal more on display, his ability to beat defenders one-on-one, his craftiness and skill, creating chances for teammates.
Those teammates are led by Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain’s leading scorer in the tournament, with four goals. Left-wing Nico Williams loves to attack fullbacks with his speed, and attacking midfielder Pedri brings vision and passing.
The match is today, 3 p.m. EST, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In World Cup betting at Betway, France is +140, Spain is +220, and the draw is +200.
The star power of France’s Kylian Mbappé, in the tournament’s Golden Boot race, with eight goals (tied with Argentina’s Lionel Messi) is a storyline sports bettors need to be aware of.
France’s offence has been prolific, scoring 16 goals while winning all six of its matches. At Betway, France is the +150 favourite to win the World Cup, followed by England (+333), Spain (+333) and Argentina (+450).
Remember, Spain knocked France out of the Euro 2024 semi-final and beat them in a Nations League thriller, so France wants payback.
France enters the game undefeated, while Spain and their elite defence have given up just one goal.
Neither side is reporting any major injuries heading into the semifinal.
My best bet is for France to win in regulation, given its experience and Mbappé’s form. The player props offering the most value are Mbappé to score anytime (+105) and Lamine Yamal to record an assist (+350).
I’ll also put some money down on the Over 2.5 Total Goals (-115), factoring in the attacking talent, especially on the French side.
Also, keep an eye on today’s weather conditions in Dallas. Heat and humidity can leave legs tired later in the match, resulting in more chances.
